ESPN's projection gives Clemson 19.8% chance to win ACC |
Clemson has been ranked #7 in the nation in the 2017 rankings of the ESPN Football Power Index. However, the
index was updated on Wednesday afternoon to include several different interesting projections.
The Tigers were given a 19.8% to win the ACC conference while only a 1.9% to go undefeated according to the projections. Clemson was projected to also have a 9.4 win season with 2.9 losses with a strength of schedule of #20 overall. Here is the breakdown of odds for Clemson against each opponent on their 2017 schedule according to the FPI index. Kent State - 98.9% Auburn - 52.5% Louisville - 55.8% Boston College - 95.4% Virginia Tech - 74.2% Wake Forest - 92.2% Syracuse - 81.7% Georgia Tech - 88.4% North Carolina State - 63.9% Florida State - 44% The Citadel - 99.1% South Carolina - 75.0% ACC Atlantic rival Florida State was given a 56% chance to defeat Clemson on Nov. 11 in Death Valley. The Seminoles were the conference favorite to win the ACC with a 49% chance to win. ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance for a season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is, and projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. The top ten schools in the FPI were Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida State, Auburn, LSU, Clemson, Penn State, Washington, and Wisconsin. Clemson kicks off the 2017 regular season with a home contest against Kent State on September 2.
