Chad Kelly suspended by CFL for a minimum of nine games |
Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly has been suspended for the 2024 preseason and a minimum of nine regular season games for violating the league's gender-based violence policy.
A former female strength and conditioning coach employed by the Argonauts accused Kelly of harassment in a toxic environment which she claims violated Ontario's Human Rights Code. The team is also being sued by her for wrongful termination. "Players are the ambassadors of our great game,” CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie said in a statement. “They are expected to be leaders in the locker room and role models in the community. It was important that we performed our due diligence to properly review this matter from all points of view. That in-depth investigation found that Mr. Kelly unequivocally violated the CFL’s gender-based violence policy. Mr. Kelly's suspension is the direct result of his behavior. The addition of mandatory counseling focuses on his need for self-reflection and understanding of his actions. He must take full advantage of his opportunity for personal betterment in order to return to the CFL." Kelly was the CFL's MVP last season, throwing for 4,100 yards and 23 touchdowns. 'Swag' played for Clemson in 2013 and was 10-for-17 for 58 yards, but was dismissed following 2014 spring practice.
