How is Memphis (who is now ranked #24 in the polls) a Quad 2 Loss, but Penn St who is 13-6 and bottom third of Big Ten a Quad 1 win? None of these computer rankings make any sense or have any consistency IMO.

While I agree the truth is its still too early in conference play for any of that to make much sense.

Because Penn State was a neutral site and Memphis was a home game.

Penn State is going to start climbing. They got their All Big 10 PG Ace Baldwin back from injury.

Love face in a lot of bracket matrix moved to a 7th and 6th seed.

The location of the game matters.

The quad system looks at the opponent's NET ranking as well as where the game is played.

Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

In the case of Memphis, their NET is 42. Since we played them at home, and lost, they are a quad 2 loss. If we had played in Memphis, or even at a neutral site, they would be a quad 1 loss.

The fact that Memphis is ranked #24 in the polls is irrelevant. AP and Coaches' Poll rankings do not factor into the NET ranking.

Penn State has a NET of 48. However, we played them at a neutral site, so they count as a quad 1 win.

As you can see, it's a very fluid measurement. As teams play more games, their NET changes and thus the record versus the different quads changes as well.

Hope this helps.
