Overview:
In 1898 Clemson played its third football season. The team compiled its (then) best season record at 3-1.
According to Wikipedia:
“The Tigers completed their third season as an independent with a record of 3–1, with wins over Bingham Military School, South Carolina, and Georgia Tech, and a loss to Georgia. For the first time, Clemson played a game at home, on October 20 against Bingham Military School, and a neutral site game at Augusta, Georgia against Georgia Tech. John Penton served as the team's coach for his first season while Shack Shealy was the captain.”

Oct. 20, 1898 – The Tigers played their first home game against Bingham. Clemson won 55-0, as W.C. Forsythe kicked every PAT (11). R.T.V. Bowman, the man for whom the field at Clemson is named, was an assistant coach at that time with Clemson and helped referee the game.

The 24-0 shutout over the Gamechickens began a three game stretch in the series in which the Chickens failed to score a single point. It also gave Clemson a 2-1 record in the series – a lead that has never – and will never – be relinquished.

Interesting that in the previous season (1897) Clemson shut out the Charlotte YMCA. Between 1897 and 1898 Clemson shut out several utterly inferior opponents such as Charlotte YMCA, Bingham Military School, and South Carolina.

I’m waiting for my son to get home from Clemson. I’ve got to get up in 6 hours to go on a 5 day fishing trip with some buddies, so I hope he gets here soon. He’ll be finished with his masters in about a week.
