Gonna be an interesting one against the yardterds.

Woodaz back should help some but today's run D was pretty sad.

Glad the offense got tha swagger back at least...

Haynes and Easy E look like a good starting place at RB for the 2025 season -- Cade's last.

Things for defense is starting to look like what I said would happen under Goodwin as soon as he started losing some of the elite talent that BV left behind bc most of that talent was truly elite, and they would have made any DC look to be the best for as long as they were there.

Believe when I say that I hate that I was right, but I knew our defense would look the way that it's looking as soon as some of the elite talent that BV left had started to thin out and we're starting to see those results now.

I remember reading that people around our FB program were saying how intelligent Goodwin was and all the FB smarts he had with defensive Xs and Os. We were hearing that, but I said that it wouldn't matter about how intelligent he was or how much FB smarts that he had if he didn't have the experience to help him put his FB smarts in a plan that would work with his players on the field.

When Goodwin was given the DC job, it wouldn't have mattered how intelligent he was bc the talent that BV left behind was really good elite talent that about any DC could've been successful with even with very little coaching experience, and if any of you remember my complaint about Goodwin was he didn't have much coaching experience at all at the college level, and I said that it would show as soon as the talent that BV left behind started to thin out through graduating and heading to the NFL, and those signs started showing up a little last season, and it has really been showing a lot this season.

I want to say and I hope you guys believe me, I don't have any personal issues with Goodwin, and I believe that he's a really good person, and the only issue I have about him is that he doesn't have near enough coaching experience to be the DC at Clemson. I also believe that he is an intelligent individual and that he is probably a great Xs and Os guy that understands the plays, but he doesn't have the experience that he needs for teaching what he knows to 18, 19, 20 year old young men.

As a person he has never played a down of FB that's know about, and he has never been an on the field as an active coach for a FB program anywhere, he has been around FB but he had never coached players on the field at any place he has ever been, he had been the chart toter for every coach he's ever worked for, and all of a sudden he is given the DC job at a big time FB program, and he is without a single doubt in way over his head, and if he stays at the job he has at Clemson I believe that he will continue to fail. He won't destroy our defense bc of the position coaches that Dabo hired and put around him, but it will take him years to become a suitable DC for Clemson if he ever does. He has never played FB, he has never coached a down of FB anywhere until Dabo gave him the DC job and that is the whole truth. A coach he is not, and a successful coach he has never been. Even if Wes had experience as a FB coach, I don't think that he would ever be very good at it bc he is to soft and he's coaching on the toughest side of the ball!!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wes_Goodwin

He has never played FB, he has never been an on the field coach anywhere until he was given the DC job at Clemson. Somebody please tell what makes him an experienced on the field coach that's deserving of the highest paid job on the defensive side of the ball. There is absolutely nothing in his resume that would qualify Wes Goodwin as a defensive coordinator, not even as a DC top helper...

There might be coaching change coming up esp. if USC runs all over the Tigers. Is Capehart, Weeodaze and Mickens playing against USC?

You may get your wish, but over Wes being fired, I think that Dabo would offer him his old job as an analyst bc Wes is smart as an Xs and Os guy, and I could see him as an asset in that department...

Nothing has been actually said about who on the injury list will be returning for the usuc game, for our sake I'm hoping that we have all OL personnel whose injuries wasn't season ending, will be back for this Saturday's game against the coots!!!

@ allorangeallthetime: i have to admit i did buy into the whole weslichick moneyball genius narrative at first, and i do want to point out that in some guys i think Wes style has been of a benefit as opposed to Venables very aggressive but kind of one mode charlie mindset.

we all know at times venables style was "too much" the first championship against bama as an example probably 3 of there touchdowns was overpursuit mindset......wes style probably would have been good in that game, and also maybe in the Ohio State game covid year.

but having said that yeah.......citadel having there best run game of the year is just really bad, Venables was a master against triple option and in general run game.......his whole time at Clemson the only team that gashed us with the run was Pitt at death valley when they won by 1 point.

There was times like i said where venables over agressive style showed too much of a singular mindset......LSU...Ohio State....and once against Bama.......but they lost because of the pass defense in all those games........its sort of demoralizing when teams like louisville and Citadel run right at you....that simply wouldnt happen under venables...........look at what he did to Bama tonight......he knew if you took away Jalen Millroe run ability thats 80 percent of bamas superpower......sure enough hes quite average when you eliminate his run. Veneables would absolutely scheme to take away the gamecock rush this week and make them throw it 60 times,

Mind that you know when I make a statement that it is my personal opinion and I'm open for it to be challenged just as you're doing. My answer for BV guys over pursuing is a good observation, but I must say that I would much rather have my guys fired up and running through the OL than I would seeing them getting pushed around and a QB having as much time needed to throw the ball. We did win more games with BV as our DC than we ever will with Wes as DC. The times that our guys over pursued getting into the back field, there should have a LB holding his ground and using his eyes looking for an escaped ball carrier slipping through one of the holes that our D lineman would blow open;)

Dear David,

Two comments.

First, the implied ‘why not 3 LB set (which, to my recollection, was send nylon against VA Tech). We are too thin at LB to play that set regularly. Against VA Tech, we had a healthy Woodaz and Carter as the experienced foundation on which to help to cover up for the inevitable mistakes that the third LB (Sammy Brown) would inevitably commit while he gained much needed experience. Another critical aspect of running a three LB set that would not leave us overexposed to the pass was the maturation of Jaheim Lawson as a legitimately competent second true DE to allow us to play a three DL set. Peter Woods is the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ in the 3 man DL in which he can play either the lone DT role or one of the DE roles.

Being able to scrape together enough of the right players (with each of those players having the true ability to do the job very well) is what allows us to play either a 3 -3 - 5 or a 4 - 2 - 5 set and to switch up quickly. We will hopefully have a healthy Woodaz and healthy Woods, Lawson, and Parker … each of those players must be healthy for us to pull off the quick-change defense sets to confuse S.Carolina into making mistakes. S.Carolina has plenty of history this season to remind us that they make plenty of turnovers with their erratic offense.

Second, why must Goodwin telegraph his blitzes so often? When indeed Goodwin ever disguises his blitz packages, he does so with one player (almost always being one DB) that makes avsurprise psss rush. With Goodwin's typical telegraphing of the blitx, the opponent's offense has plenty of time to change the OL, TE, and RB blocking schemrs to manage the sure-to-come blitx on tgat play. Not to mention thatba yelegraphed blitz allows inexperienced QBs and poorly coordinated offenses like S.Cqrolina's to call for adjustments un WR routes to batnthe blitz.

it is this second aspect that concerns mebso muvh about Goodwin. Watching the OK defense throttle Bama last night, I wss legt pining for the blitz disguises that BV ran when he was our DC.

Summary is that, finally, we have the bare-boned numbers and player readiness (whivh includes knowing where to go -and- being able to make the required plsh when that play comes his way) to be a very good defense against both the run and the pass.

Can ( or will) Goodwin disguise the blitz?

What happened to the predicted before season opener, the elite front 7 we had on defense? Louisville's offensive line whipped them and had their way with our defense and yesterday watching the citadel (liberty high school) offensive line push the defense around like they did??? Giving up more rushing yards then western carolina did on defense? Defense has taken several steps backwards this year and really don't think goodwin is the answer for having a dominant elite defense again. We had an extra week for the defense to prepare for louisville during the off-week and D still got steam rolled. If the defense resembles what we had show up yesterday, its going to be a long day next week against the gamecocks. I hope the defensive mad-man that he has been referred too...can draw up a winning game plan this coming saturday.

I fully expect Dabo to hire a new DC for next year. I know nothing about coaching football, but I can see the same deterioration in our D that all others have discussed. I don’t know where Dabo’s mind was when he tried to replace a top notch DC with an aid. Even his choice for OC to replace Tony E. made some sense. But this pick seemed to surprise Godwin as much as it did many others.
I just hope someone can make some changes before Saturday.
Go Tigers.

Remember: Each Sunday morning after a game Dabo is still in charge. Whoever he selects as a Coach he has to live with their results. So far, winning 9 plus games a year has been good enough for the BOT and AD at Clemson. As an IPTAY member it is good enough for me. If he (Dabo) makes changes or does not make changes his the Staff it suits me just fine as I am not accountable for their actions. Go Tigers.
