Some of the worst officiating I have seen in years.
Oct 2, 2022, 2:11 AM
|
|
Phantom roughing the passer call, many holding no-calls on the Pack, no-call pass interference against Beaux Collins, etc. Plus the targeting call that was never even called on the field. Have not been this frustrated with officiating in a while.
Great WIN in spite of these issues Tigers!!!

It was bad both ways.... That PI they called on NC state early was terrible.

I must have missed that one. If you are talking about the play I think the DB was clearly there early against our TE. It wasn't by a lot but that is irrelevant.

^This!
The refs were just way too involved. Ticky-tacky PI, targeting overstepping, and my personal pet peeve, the review of the little swing pass to the sideline that gained 2 yards. Who cares? Totally breaks the flow of the game on a mostly inconsequential play. Argh!

Yea I agree 100% I hate when we don't get to see the players play. Honestly Defensive back has to easily be the hardest position in football with how little techniques you have available to defend a pass. The call should be made if the DB impedes the catch. Not if he simply has an arm on his shoulder of hip. Thats legal as long as it doesn't turn the receiver. Let me play

Like I said last night after watching the Wake vs. FSU game

where Wake had a couple of holding calls. We are in the top 10 year in and year out in sacks and TFLs but did not get one holding call against Wake in the Wake game. Last night, the targeting call and the PI on #9 and that roughing the passer call on RUKE were JOKES. It is embarrasing to the ACC or at least it should be.I'd like to horse whip the committee that first started the targeting rule. It has gotten way out of hand.

By rule, that targeting on Mukuba was correct
Oct 2, 2022, 9:25 AM

The rule is in place to protect the defender as much as the offensive player. Look what happened to Mukuba's neck on that tackle. He could've very, very easily injured himself there. Gotta keep that head up.

This! Mukuba hopefully learned last night NOT to tackle with the crown of the helmet like Skalski was prone to do. An LSU player did the same last night covering a kick and left the field in an ambulance. Keep your eyes up if your helmet is the first thing to make contact.

same with the one against State. Don't think either player should have been ejected though. They were both mistakes, not malicious.

ACC hires officials that represent their brand. They are garbage and the “officials” are their puppets.

You left out the worst no call in the whole game which was when the NC State player shoved Shipley out of bounds!

There were two pretty bad PI calls - one against each team
Oct 2, 2022, 9:38 AM
|

The roughing the passer call that negated the INT was really soft - that was more acting than anything.
Both targeting calls were correct IMO.
I just can't get into whining about missed holding calls. Unless it's out in the open and super, super blatant and obvious (like one last week that wasn't called against Wake), I just don't care. I guarantee you that if you go to our opponents message board during or after a game you will see the exact same posts over there whining about holding that wasn't called on our OL. Those things just go both ways.
Overall, this was nowhere even close to the worst officiating I've seen.

My take on the targeting calls....
Oct 2, 2022, 9:47 AM
|
|
By rule they were both correct.
However... both are examples as to why there needs to be minor/major targeting penalties. Ejecting players due to those type of "targeting" plays shouldn't happen. Maybe call those a "tackling infraction" that is 10 yards and no ejection. Even if it stays a 15 yard personal foul without the ejection I'd be ok with it. The ejections for "minor" targeting are harming the game even if the penalties are correct.

Neither targeting call (one on each team) was called on the field. Until I see multiple slow mo replays on TV, everything I saw at the stadium looked like the PI call at the goal line and the roughing the passer were both terrible. Especially the roughing the passer call barely a bump and not very late. Forget helmet stickers, give that QB an Oscar for best flop.
