Mama was half Comanche and hell-on-wheels.

And every bit a lady.

One day after church I pulled the car around to pick her up and was distracted by some friends who waved me over. So I put it in park and loped over to see what was what.

A few minutes later I got back in the car, put it in gear and moved on out. I'd made it a half-block when I realized Mama wasn't in the car.

I circled back to find her standing right where I'd left her; pulled up to the curb, rolled down the passenger window, and asked what was the matter.

"Son, until I prove otherwise you'll treat me like a lady, and this lady does not open car doors if she can help it."

One of a hundred lessons I've never forgotten.

These days, you've got empowered women, liberated women, women who want to be men and men who want to be women. But ladies? They're getting harder and harder to spot.

Thankful I was raised by one. I miss her a lot.

Happy Mother's Day.

You were/are a lucky man. I miss the grand old ladies that kept the family business...good and bad...to themselves. The concept of bashing your friends and family on Social Media, while posting photos of yourself sticking out your tongue or puckering your lips just isn't something I'll ever accept.

I had two aunts that lived into their 90's. I never saw either wearing anything besides a dress. They mowed grass in a dress. They gardened in a dress. And it wasn't a religious preference. One refused to step a foot into a church, even though she was a firm believer in the Bible. They earned your respect just from the way they carried themselves.

My mother wasn't June Cleaver. But she wasn't Roseanne either. After her death I found peace in our relationship by realizing she gave me a much better childhood than she had. And isn't that all we can ask of anyone?

was a rumor of a woman at about 4'10" who was breathtakingly beautiful and who also had no middle ground. Every room of her house had a gun somewhere in it -- .25s, .38s, .410 Snakecharmers ... she was well-heeled.

She was strong in all the right ways, gentle in the others, and also hilariously funny. Smoked Virginia Slims and drove a diesel Cadillac and owned a chain of beauty supply stores in the greater Houston area.

"Beauty may be skin deep but ugly goes straight to the bone," was one of her favorites.

When my wild older sister got too much to handle one year, Mama sent her to Nannie's for the summer to give everyone a break.

She immediately hitched up with a dude that Nannie found unsuitable. Didn't matter -- they kept at it. Until one night he brought her home and decided it'd be a good idea to walk her to the front door.

As my sister tells it, the porch light came on, a tiny hand holding a .38 snub nose slipped through the crack in the front door, and a voice from the darkness said, "I've asked you nicely to stay away from my granddaughter. I'm not asking anymore."

He eventually married my sister. But he never crossed Nannie again.

I miss her too.

First mothers day w/o my Mom. She was a great lady who worked at Oak Ridge during the war. Then had a successful career with a major corporation. After that she volunteered at a local hospital for years. I used to call her on fathers days too because for years she was both mom and dad to us boys when my dad died young. She was a wonderful mom and lady

Good post! And this is why it is not disrespect to say Lady Tigers but more of an endearing term!

Should be Mothers Day. There is nothing like them. Followed closely by Fathers! I know you think you had the best …. But you didn’t!

Yours was great however. And don’t ever forget that.
