What exactly prompted you to dog someone’s religion?

Is atheism a religion? Or absence of religion?

They think they do. I took religion as electives in college and still use the text books for citations in discussions. I’ve had to school many people on the history of the Bible and how it was canonized.

I think it's quite the opposite.

I think atheism can be a sign of humility -- an acknowledgement of honesty that that individual doesn't have all the answers and isn't comfortable just taking someone else's word for it.
I think it's much easier to just go with the flow of what the rest of the crowd is telling you to do -- or to just say "Sure, I believe." just to avoid the social ridicule that would come otherwise (especially in more religious parts of the county like the Deep South).
I'm not trying to be disrespectful to either side in saying this. Just trying to observe and empathize.

Isn't religion ultimately an attempt to apply reason to existence?

...An attempt to answer the questions, where did we come from, why are we here, and what's our purpose?

You might want to make that a priority before it is too late.

If your sole reason for believing is to save your ### from the fire just in case God/Heaven/#### DO exist, without necessarily believing in the Word or teachings of the Bible, is that really faith?

Funny I never heard BSU stating that. I did hear the reference to Jesus, but it seems there are a fair share of folks thank God in their interviews.
Sad, but hey I don’t believe in atheist either and there is nothing that is going to happen that would cause any type of conversion.

I love these two quotes. I am assuming that Hawkings was primarily speaking about Christianity.
Stephen Hawking: “Religion is a fairy tale for people afraid of the dark.”
John Lennox: “Atheism is a fairy tale for people afraid of the light.”
PS: Google John Lennox ....fascinating man

Two things are true about atheists: 1) They don’t believe in God. 2) They are mad at Him.

Your post and the OP are both excellent examples of humor. Both invoke emotions that cause people to react.
