Rick saw the writing on the wall. The ACC would always protect the Tobacco Road teams, especially UNC and Duke. He knew Clemson would never get a fair shake in the ACC. How many foul shots did Duke just shoot against us on this last game? How many did we shoot? Listen to what Rick said about his dust up with Dean on the Seth Davis shows. Listen carefully. What did he tell commissioner Gene Corrigan? It is clear Rick knew there was high corruption that went all the way to the ACC Commissioner’s level. Who did he challenge in that meeting? Rick was right in my estimation. It continues today. Plus he had an uphill battle in that Clemson was not a basketball school, hard place to recruit top bball talent, etc. Rick had his flaws. I think he knew he was up against such organized and powerful corruption, he would never come out on top.

This wasn’t the game we finished with four players was it?
If you look at the lineup he inherited when he took the Clemson job you would wonder how he won a game. The big man from the year before opted out and moved to California to play in the NBA.nCoach Barnes was left with nothing and put a solid team on the court many nights.

Pre-season #5 was the year after Clemson went to the Sweet 16 in 1997.
I had to double-check because I was also surprised we were ranked so high!
Unfortunately, we ended the year (97-98 team) losing in the 1st rd to Western Michigan (an 11th seed). I really wonder how different things would have been if Rick B has stuck around instead of bolting to Texas.

Got some revenge vs the Holes. Before the Buckner Jam, there was also a game at Littlejohn where Rick Barnes chased Dean Smith to the tunnel after the game because Dean Smith was talking junk to reserve PG Bill Harder.

Also, Brad Brownell has had an altercation with Roy Williams after this game. He didn't like UNC players talking to his bench and players. Someone will ask Brad about this after his Hall of Fame carrer.
