Interesting theory I heard today.

FSU follows this theory to the ultimate. They are the outlier. But, here is the theory - As long as we have unrestricted free agency in football, we will see wild swings in records - to the worse - from year to year. Halfway through the season, here are a few examples of "big name" teams.

FSU 13-1 to 1-5

OK ST (picked by many to win Big 12) 10-4 to 3-3.
Kansas 9-4 to 1-5
Michigan 15-0 to 4-2
Washington 14-1 to 4-3

Michigan and Washington played for the national championship last year. Michigan is currently ranked 24th and Washington isn't ranked.

Moral of the story (FSU and Miami are the poster children), if you're going to the portal you better not miss on your QB.

This seems more like a fact than a theory. How can you predict chemistry year to year with a roster turning over and having maybe 5 or 6 new starters on each side of the ball? I mean you can grade players individually but who knows how they will react and mesh with one another. Dabo may have the right idea keeping chemistry and the team mentality first.

I would agree to the 2nd point as well. You bring in a QB and miss on him, you’re going to be in a world of hurt. Not to mention, you’ll likely lose the trust of the team as well as the fan base

Why would anyone consider a theory from someone schooled at FSWTC...athletic department needs serious reality check...folks driving around in 100k sports cars that the license plate says FSU was the 2023 national champion ( maybe that was of the northern Seminole tribe)...and then losing by 60 in the Orange Bowl to Jawja, the math department needs some serious restructering...along with the administration who is suing the ACC cause they have not spent their money wisely! (SEEMS TO BE A TIGER DISEASE AS WELL) Maybe we can believe you later!

Someone included Nebraska. I can assure you Matt ruhle won't go the portal route. He lost a lot of players when they brought him in so he had to get something. A lot were sophomore or rs at smaller schools.

I get what you're saying. But you have to include a lot more teams than Clemson uga and bama. People act like if a school takes players from the portal, they're subject to inconsistencies in chemistry. That's simply not the case.

Yes, it panders to the segment of the fanbase. There's a lot more Dabo's coaching than many think.

Last year Clemson 9-4 > 5-1 ??? Proves nothing.

Only issue with me is that when you’re discussing FSU and Miami with portal QBs, you must realize that DJ isn’t in the same vicinity as Cam Ward.

You definitely WILL miss if you choose to bring a QB like DJ in out of the portal. If there ever will be another like him.

To this day man, I seriously am astonished and at a lack of words as to what Norvell was doing.

There’s not much to say. DJ was an afterthought after Clemson.

The only thing you could point to was that Oregon State had an outlier year. They won a lot of games. DJ did at Clemson too.

But now we know that Clemson was so good, they led DJ to multiple 9+ win seasons.

But we all were suffering. DJ, regardless of the amount of wins I guess, was just plain awful.

Slow reader of defenses, questionable decision-maker, slow runner with limited shiftiness, lack of internal clock, inaccurate passer, lack of competitive fire, etc.

Throw in coaches that didn’t have a game-ready QB developed and ready as backup, that stuck to a predictable, limited, game plan because they didn’t trust him completely, and a stubbornness to make the needed roster adjustments to bridge the gap sooner.

No surprise in retrospect.

There are multiple intangibles which those NIL/portal based programs miss.

You can't build allegiance with NIL seeking players anymore than you can build a relationship with a hooker.

The locker rooms are always going to be venues for confusion, mistrust, jealousy and a plethora of emotions which divide rather than unite. The one thing those programs can not manufacture is unity.

Logical fallacy.

Teams can and do build cohesion with a mix of portal players and recruits.

It's up to the coaches and how they handle it. The ones that adapt do well.

Clemson is the outlier because we don't recruit using the NIL as a tool.

Football programs' demand for more NIL funding to remain steady rather than yoyoing is going to be stunning.

Meanwhile, Clemson, Army, Navy, AF will remain steady and take advantage of that stability.

I believe your take on these circumstances is accurate, perhaps obviously simple. Good job.

It's not that they "don't" use the portal and NIL, it's that they "can't".

There is only one FBS school that doesn't use the portal by choice. Clemson.

I think it would be easy to say the portal was a detriment to your program if most of your team left. FSU players left before their bowl game! And I suppose that when a HC leaves, so do many of the players and potential recruits. Although I have a tough time believing that some kid actually said, "Gee, I really wanted to play for Jim Harbaugh".

It's harder to connect the dots in the opposite direction. Getting these players was the direct cause for our success. I could make the case that Burrow at LSU was a good get. That's hindsight. And he wasn't out there alone. And I think we can agree that flipping a team is not the recipe for success.

Not trying to make a case one way or another. Programs are still feeling their way through this. It's really too knew and their just finding out what works and what doesn't.

Bottom line, if you think wins and losses are determined by QBs (it's not) there are 70 Power schools and not even close to that many really good QBs out there. The make up of teams change every year and thinking just because a team won last year, means very little this year.
