Georgia’s national championship
Mar 11, 2022, 12:57 PM
|

First of all let me say kudos to Georgia for winning it all this year. You were the best team and beat us.
But since they have won the natty we have all heard lots of talk of Georgia’s ascendancy to elite status- with the ranks of bama, us , Ohio state , (Oklahoma- ish) Which, this past year, Georgia was better than all of these teams.
But a different take, how much did the elite teams having down years contribute to Georgia’s first natty in the modern era of college football?
Bama obviously lacked the manpower on both fronts we are used to seeing. For us, we obviously had major offensive issues we haven’t been used to in a decade Ohio state had a very down year defensively.
So was it an ascendancy to elite status? Or was it a result of elite teams having down years? Time will tell.

Totally agree bc, our D will most likely be the best D that been seen in college FB for sometime if, if that injury BUG has move past us to another team somewhere else. Personally, I hope that Oklahomo has the wort Defense in D 1 FB every year that Todd Bates has anything to do with it.

Georgia has been an elite program for years but never quite got over the hump. Winning the National Championship is like running a marathon. The season starts in February and lasts until the next January and as we know, a zillion things have to come together to cross the finish line. Will Georgia win again, will we win again, you just don't know until you know but it is a long hard race.

Georgia split games with Alabama.

Alabama was was not full strength in the NCG. It’s a stretch for me to call them national champions much less say they were the best team in the country last year. Definitely a great team and one that dawg fans should be proud of. Definitely one of the top two last season. As far as how they stack up against recent champions from previous seasons I for one am not that impressed. Average QB play at best. The transfer portal has definitely taken a toll on the depth chart of top programs and we may never see the type of teams that Alabama, Clemson and the one hit wonder LSU have produced in recent years.
How do these things bode for Georgia’s future? I don’t know. Honestly their future looks as bright talent and recruiting wise as it always has. Does that translate into more championships for them or more of the same underachieving that we’ve come to expect from Georgia? We will have to see.

Similar to the coots sole conference championship being the year no other team in the ACC had a record over 0.500. What insane luck for the chickens.

Three of the four teams that made your "elite status" didn't even qualify for their conference championship game last season. How elite is that?

Pretty much explains what he is saying in a nut shell . The elite teams were a little down this year opening up a path for Georgia that has watched others get crowned champions for over 40 years prior .

Or put another way, Clemson had a recent loss to a team who had a recent home loss to SC as a 30 point favorite.

They're reaching but it's about all they got. Remember how Clemson and DJ Whatshisname was going to light up the Dawgs? By 10pm that night they had all become Clemson Tide fans. Bama spanks UGA in Atlanta and hope was restored to some of the Clemson faithful. Michigan would finish off the Dawgs. That didn't work out and hope rested once again on Saban. Surely he would salvage Clemson's season. In the end, Dawgs are not only Champs but took a path that included not just beating Clemson but psychologically destroying their next great QB.

For those of us that have followed DJ since and before HS knew that he was not on the same level as DW4 or TL16, maybe Tahj as well. I was at the spring game last year and knew that it would be a tall task to to get back to the playoffs and if you couple that with the fact that our receiving corp looked out of sync then my suspicions were correct. He had issues well before the UGA game but that wasn't the reason he was lethargic the rest of the season.

If does not make one bit of difference to anybody but puppy fans that come over here and claim to be the second best thing to white bread and butter! Georgia won- ok, great job end of discussion. Does not make you a powerhouse or the second coming of the football gods. You squeaked out a win against what many would call a middle of the road Clemson team that was basically last in just about every offensive stat this year. The rest of your wins were also over teams that were not at full strength or basically sucked!
I don't think I heard one time last season the gauntlet through the SEC is hardest thing in the world! We can't win because it is so hard- Hell-o ESPN didn't spew that trash.

The idea that Bama was better than UGA seems to matter quite a bit to the host of Clemson Tide fans here who were devastated Bama lost. Same bunch thought Michigan was better than UGA too. You guys keep bringing up Clemson's close loss to UGA. If it makes you feel better that Clemson only lost by 7, I'm happy for you.
No UGA fan in this thread has suggested UGA is elite or a dynasty. Some of you are still struggling with the UGA championship.

beat Ga. in the SEC championship game. IF u have lost to a team that season and play them again, the team that lost the 1st game should have to beat u twice. I think ALA, would have won a 3rd game. the same thing happened to Fla. ST. when Spurrier was Fla. coach. Fla won the 2nd game but Fla.St. was clearly the Better team. If u have alteady beat a team, the advantage goes to the losing team the 2nd game. To win should never be a disadvantage

As bad as I hate to say it, UGA has been better than O'yankeeboys, and Oklahomo for the past few years IMO. They've surely had the talent that should have won another natty for the past 5 or so years.

Better talent yes. Better results over the past decade, no.
That’s the difference to me in a talented team and an elite dynasty.

Better results over the past decade, no.
When you say "better results over the past decade", what criteria are you using? If you look at total overall games won over the last 10 seasons, Ohio St, Okl & UGA are 3rd, 4th, & 5th nationally out of the 130 or so I-A teams. Not a hill of beans difference there. Ohio St & UGA each have a National Championship, Okl does not. UGA has the best CFP record at 3-1 (.750), vs 3-3 (.500) for Ohio St, and 0-4 (.000) for Okl. UGA has the most Bowl Game wins (9) and the best Bowl Record (9-3) of the three, with Ohio St at 7-4 and Okl at 4-6. Ohio St has one more win against Top 10 opponents than UGA with 19 vs 18, but that difference is from the 2012-14 timeframe. Recently, UGA has more.
So just wondering what criteria you are using.

Georgia was one of those teams that really benefitted from the NCAA rule to allow 6th year Seniors due to Covid-19. Their roster usually gets wasted by poor develpment and off the field issues. Sadly for UGA, they will be an average SEC team next year. However, they will probably continue their reign as recruiting champions.

UGA had one 6th year Sr on the roster last year: Julian Rochester. He did not start any game, and saw limited action in only 6 games last year - primarily 4th qtr mop up duty in blowouts. And you may want to ask 1st round draft pick and former 3-star recruit Eric Stokes, or soon-to-be 1st rounders and former 3-stars Jordan Davis and DeVonte Wyatt about UGA's and Kirby's player development. And as far as next year, sure anything can happen, but would you be willing to make a gentleman's wager on where UGA finishes up in the SEC standings?

UGA had the Top D (the NFL Combine performance by UGA defenders was phenomenal). And an improved and functional Offense was enough to get the job done. Could they have beat Clemson 2018, LSU 2019 and a handful of Bama championship teams? I do not believe so but debatable for Dawg fans.

Like I said last week - If you play in 3 more national championship games in the next 4 years and win at least one of them then we’ll talk about whether you have eclipsed Clemson as far as elite status. So far you’re a 1 year dynasty like LSU.

I’ve never understood the need for fans to tear down their rivals. It would seem to be counterproductive: the better your opponents, the better you appear if you can beat them. But finding ways to detract from others is human nature. My dad can beat your dad. My toy is better than yours. Etc. Georgia was and is good. Elitism is a smoke screen for all fans. What matters is production. And that’s ALWAYS year to year.
It takes months to build a house and only minutes for it to burn. Hubris!
