Clemson's university logo

May 25, 2010, 11:46 PM

I know the picture quality of the old university logo doesn't compare to the picture of the second, but I can't stand the second one.

I remember when a poll went out asking students to vote on a change to the university logo, and the numbers overwhelmingly supported keeping it the same. So what did they do? Change it anyways.

Changing the "university" underneath to whatever font that is instead of Times New Roman was just silly in my opinion, and adding the extra bar was completely unnecessary. Also, that little fake-seal thing they added doesn't help.

It just looks cartoon-y to me.

Hmmm.. I actually like it. The old one was almost too basic.

I like the new logo. It is classy and distinctive.

May 26, 2010, 1:59 AM

The previous logo consists of nothing but text and a line. It wasn't bad, but the new one is better.

I have mixed feelings

May 26, 2010, 6:32 AM

I like the new tiger "shield" okay--don't love it, but i think it's kind of cool. It's also supposed to be limited in use to specific situations so I can live with that.

I can't stand the new "UNIVERSITY" font. Not crazy about the bottom line but can live with it.

I thought the old logo was awesome--classy, simple, clean. The new one is a little catchier thanks to the shield, but i think overall it's not much an improvement--if any.

May 26, 2010, 8:09 AM

one looks like a faded purple and orange. I know you said picture qualitiy was an issue with your post, but I believe you said the second was higher quality. THe purple in the second one sucks.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Initial impression: I agree. The emblem next to the text

May 26, 2010, 8:20 AM

seems really out-of-place and has no historical reference that I know of. The text itself is fine, but I do prefer the one line instead of the two. It's cleaner.

Maybe with time...

Clemson colors...

May 26, 2010, 8:33 AM

Clemson has taken it upon themselves to screw with colors. I worked for years on many items for CU and the colors were standard PMS colors 268 & 165. Well CU decided, "Hey, we're different, unique, we should have our own signature colors and we'll expect our vendors to match them across the board." So, CU took some colors they used/liked and decided to "tweak" them to their liking. Now it's wreaking havoc on printers, etc. to match everything. They spent who knows how much time on these color "standards." So now what you used to use as Pantone, LAB, RGB, CMYK industry standards are now based on "perception" of colors by CU. They are now named such things as Clemson Orange, Tillman Brick, Regalia, Centennial Oak, Innovations, etc. I call it a giant CF.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Horrible, asinine decisions made by designers, no doubt, who

May 26, 2010, 10:35 AM

have NO CLUE about printing and reproduction.

Was the GC department involved in this crazy process ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes

May 26, 2010, 9:54 PM

The specs were done by the GC dept in conjunction with the new Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The colors have Clemson names but have lab values

May 26, 2010, 5:14 PM [ in reply to Clemson colors... ]

This does not "wreak havoc" on printers, its about the same for the printer because all they have to do is match an lab value. It does help with color consistency because Pantone 165 and 268 do not print the same on different substrates, presses, etc. McDonalds is working on doing it the same way. I believe coke already does.

As for the logo. The shield is kinda strange, but the logo is nice I think. Its a little more modern

How about just using the PAW!

May 26, 2010, 10:22 AM

I can't believe that people are paid to sit around and come up with this . The Tiger Paw should be the university logo for everything, no just athletics. Christ Almighty, people like to make things harder than they need to be.

Because you need different logos for different situations.

May 26, 2010, 1:09 PM

The paw is cool for athletics, but it doesn't exactly scream "academic excellence" when official letterhead for a formal letter. Other schools have several logos as well, depending on the situation.

I think it's good to change things every now and then. Studies have shown that a fresh, updated logo every now and then actually improves worker enthusiasm and organizational pride. It's obviously not going to make a huge difference, but it sure beats letting things get stale.

Why not just use the Paw, like someone else said ?

Re: HATE the old one, kinda like the new one . . .

May 26, 2010, 5:01 PM

This one is supposed to be used for academics. But its curious they put it in the endzones. I say bring back the block letters for the endzones, as well as "Tigers" in the West endzone.

Where'd that tiger come from? I thought we used a paw.

The font was never Times New Roman...There actually are several different combinations, the one pictured is with the academic shield, there are still renditions with the paw which are options for folks to use...how bout do yourself a favor and learn a little history on clemson univ and browse the brand info before posting stuff which you know nothing about...
