Best east coast ski resorts?

Oct 19, 2022, 2:08 PM

Or where to stay out west that won't cost me a kidney the week after Christmas/close to a major airport.

KMS not a skier but the kids are dying to go back.

affordable. I've heard good things about Snowshoe, as well.

The North Carolina ski resorts are probably not worth a long trip unless your kids are beginners.

I am not sure it qualifies as close to a major airport, though.

Oct 19, 2022, 2:47 PM

VT resorts are nice, but that time of year, it's just cold as nuts up there. Due to weather patterns, topology, etc, Snowshoe gets as much snow as any resort on the East Coast.

Sugar has a bit better runs but I prefer Beech

Oct 19, 2022, 7:40 PM

Sugar can get a bit crowded. Beech is also crowded but a bit faster and one of the lifts that goes to the top is usually not too busy.

scenic Mars Hill, NC. Formerly Wolf Laurel Ski Resort, this hard-pack iced hill provides challenges and thrills for skiers of all skill levels. Sometimes, the power even goes out, stranding skiers on the lift, finally dumping them off halfway up on a black diamond run, where they tell amateur skiers to "go down carefully since it's pitch black with all the lights out, and if you get hurt, just yell for help."

Far western part of MD is between WV and PA, Appalachians run through it. Very pretty out there. And makes Walhalla look like a cosmopolitan metropolis.

Re: Best east coast ski resorts?

Oct 19, 2022, 7:58 PM

I learned to ski last year and went twice, so I’m pretty much an expert. Here’s what you need to know:

1) week after Christmas is peak-peak season so it’ll be 3x more expensive than any other time of year.
2) week after Christmas is early. There’s a reasonable chance you’ll have poor conditions (50% of resort open). Safe bet is extreme NW (Canada or Montana).
3) if you want good skiing with short drive from big airport, go to Utah. Stay in Salt Lake City or spend a few more bucks and stay in Park City area. Drive to mountains from Denver sucks and everything is crowded. Wyoming is hard to get to. Montana is good but flights are expensive. California won’t have snow this year because of La Niña.
4) go west rather than NC, VA, WV. Kids will hate you if you make them ski in rain and slush on a 40 degree weekend.

Once you pick a spot, start a new thread to review best apres ski spots.

My kids have only skied Snowmass and were shocked when

Oct 20, 2022, 2:04 PM

we flew Southwest this summer and there was no first class (husband of racks up a lot of airline miles and we reap the rewards).

I'm dealing with a complex matrix of work and school schedules and the week after Christmas is the only time we can all go for a week during ski season. During the summer I can take off whatever time I need but busy season (Jan-March) is hard. Of course, busy season isn't looking like it's going to be so busy this year (Real Estate).

Re: My kids have only skied Snowmass and were shocked when

Oct 20, 2022, 3:06 PM

For a minute there, I thought you meant you flew Southwest into Aspen. Seemed like a really weird destination for them.

I’d look at Big Sky. Lodging isn’t too outrageous there compared to others but finding seats on a flight into Bozeman will be the hard part. Otherwise, I’d look at Salt Lake. Plenty of ways to get there and a bunch of great places to ski within a short radius.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uh no, you can only fly US, Delta or private into Aspen

Oct 20, 2022, 3:35 PM

from where I live ;)

Southwest was Phoenix for a different trip this summer.

Thanks for the recs I will have to check it out. Montana has been a bucket list destination of mine.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Park City is hard to beat... Loved the back bowls there.
