There’s nothing more unimportant than these recruiting rankings and stars. We may not have the #1 class but I’m #### happy with it. We are gonna be nasty in the trenches! We addressed our needs and then some. Many schools would trade places with us in a heartbeat. Let’s focus on the kids that want to be here and celebrate them. #### Good day to be a Tiger!

Yeah, I'll take my chances with those 4 and 5 star guys every year.

Wasn’t wrong in 2016, by star rating we should’ve never been on the field with Bama

Exactly. We got a top 3 class (Murphy Bresee class?) and have lost a few extra games. Our 2 most recent national championships did include a "generational" QB, but mostly 4* and under players.

QB is BY FAR the most important player on the team. Look at NFL contracts.
Look, there are outliers and opportunities for “coaching up”, but the if you graph team final rankings vs recruiting rankings, there’s a very strong mathematical correlation. Mark Packer is wrong. Nice guy, a bit lazy when it comes to recruiting, so he covers up his own laziness by claiming incessantly that “rankings don’t matter”. He is wrong.

Our 2016 team had 5 star players at QB, WR, OL, DL, and LB.

Plus a lot of high 4 star guys.
Acting like we were lacking in talent is ridiculous. We didn’t win that game because we had a bunch of unheralded recruits. Give me a break.

pay much attention to it, because you don't really know for a couple years how good the class is! I agree!

It does and doesn't. You want to stay in the 1-15 range of that ranking to have a shot of a consistent championship contending program. It means you're bringing in the really good talent to really compete. But having the #1, #3, #5, #10 etc. recruiting class doesn't really mean anything in the end outside of potential. It's about evaluation and development of those players really.
Recruiting rankings bring an unnecessary and albeit stupid competition aspect with their rankings like it's a national championship itself for some reason. When it's really just evaluation (and lazy evaluation by those services at that sometimes), which I think is what most are saying when they say the rankings don't matter.

The only people not happy with this class are the ones who don’t watch film, don’t understand football, need stars to bolster their ego when talking about their team, or believe we can just snap our fingers and get whoever we want. Have watched enough on all of these guys to know we got a tremendous class.

watch a few highlights and evaluate HS players from different states, different classifications, etc, from 1-A in New Hampshire to 7-AAAAAA in Texas. Nobody can do that except guys who make millions doing it. The best college coaches in America still need to see them in person in camps, All America games, Elite 11s, or whatever. And even then... they miss on some. Nobody posting on Tigernet has those skills. Not even you.
But if you really are that good, you need to switch careers. You're leaving a lot of money on the table. I've been watching and studying college football for over 50 years, but what do I know.

It’s not rocket science to watch games/highlights and see the talent. Can you watch it and know they are going to be good without a shadow of a doubt absolutely not and guess what???? The recruiting services are no different no matter the rating they have no clue what a player will become. But with this class their is a ton of talent

Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather have a top 10 class instead of 30. I just don’t put a ton of merit into these stars. Wasn’t some of our best RBs a 3 star? Renfrow didn’t even have a star. I hate to say it but we better get use to it. The NIL will keep us from signing Top 5 classes because we don’t have the budget.

Sounds like a rationalization for a disappointing recruiting class.

It sounds nice to talk about heart and perseverance and those unheralded recruits who proved everyone wrong. Those stories are great, but those cases are rare.
Championship teams are built around elite talent, not just heart.
So yes, we should absolutely value the guys who chose us. Let’s trust our coaches to get players who address our team needs. But let’s never forget that talent is the most important thing successful teams need.

Our 2020 class was ranked #3 and turned out to be a real mixed bag.
DJ, Bowman, Fred Davis, EJ Williams.
But we also had Bresee, Murphy, Simpson.
