They’ve been extinct for like 10,000 years
Is this a good direction to go in, or a bad one?
Genetically engineering organisms is a lethal weapon, not an exploration method.
This is awful, and can start disaster

Those cubs were born Oct 24 of last year. I am studying CRISPR technology in my masters and we have been following this closely. The first female was born yesterday.
Quite an amazing story. They are close to editing an elephant into a Wooly Mammoth. They have had to keep the location above top secret because many believe gene editing is unethical.

I thought they’d use gray wolves as the host, that’s weird
Just for anybody not understanding CRISPR
Basically in very very short detail….
Enzymes are naturally occurring molecules in the body, used to speed up and manage biological and chemical processes within the body. Enzymes are protein, by the way.
There is an enzyme called CAS9
CAS9 is an “RNA-guided DNA endonuclease enzyme”
There is a type of RNA called gRNA. Yes, its function is guiding. To put it simply.
This gRNA you insert it into another animal (genome), will form a system with the CAS9 enzyme and take the CAS9 system to the target gene.
When CAS9 gets to its target gene, such as hair color, fur density, etc. It can cut both of the 2 DNA strands at specific locations. DNA is double-stranded. Hence why I said, “can cut both strands”
Now that there are missing spaces in those DNA strands, you are able to fill those with “plasmids” I think
Not that short

I don't think it's playing God at all. It's subduing the world as man was commanded to do. They have not created anything new. They looked at the grey wolf that was a normal and natural decendent or comparable species to the extinct wolf. They added and removed protiens (genes) to make the DNA strands match what would be a complete DNA strand for the dire wolf. That's not being God that is just using science to decode what God did.

Nope, Just Sayin is correct: "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter" (Proverbs 25:2)
God was once approached by a scientist who said, “Listen God, we’ve decided we don’t need you anymore. These days we can clone people, transplant organs and do all sorts of things that used to be considered miraculous.”
God replied, “Don’t need me huh? How about we put your theory to the test. Why don’t we have a competition to see who can make a human being, say, a male human being.”
The scientist agrees, so God declares they should do it like he did in the good old days when he created Adam.
“Fine” says the scientist as he bends down to scoop up a handful of dirt.”
“Whoa!” says God, shaking his head in disapproval. “Not so fast. You get your own dirt.”

How were we responsible for their extinction, habitat loss, over hunting?
If it’s been extinct for 10,000 yrs then maybe that’s part of Gods plans.
Interesting, but not sure I’ll agree that this is a good idea. We may screw it up.

Yeah, that's us humans. Just because we can edit genes to bring back something doesn't mean we should.
Afterall humans have caused countless species to end up in places they weren't meant and its cause massive ecological problems
-kudzu -snakeheads -pythons -stinkbugs -spotted lantern fly -zebra mussels -lionfish -gypsy moth etc

This says it all. Besides there isn't enough habitat for the grey wolf, why bring in another competitor.
Dr. Ian Malcolm: your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.

I think if they realesed these into the wild it would be about 3 generations and they would have interbred with the grey wolves and we'd have nothing but gray wolves again and an occasional white one showing up. Kinda like it is now.

They would likely also end up being a preseve freaks because elephants...mammoths need massive wide open grazing spaces that don't really exist anymore. I suppose if they can live in the far north where there are very few people they might actually be beneficial and successful.
