I'm IPTAY, an alum, a HUGE sports fan and attend a lot of football, basketball, baseball and softball games, my father was offered a scholarship by Coach Howard and I'm ALL IN...... BUT this is ridiculous. Every student does not benefit from nor should they have to pay for athletics @ Clemson University. NO NO NO. #### no.

Completely disagree, not a good sign. It means nothing that we're the last ones in the state to charge this fee. It DID mean something when we didn't.

My opinion but I'm pissed @ my school. It's not right..... for many reasons.

Athletics are the front porch of a university. Nick Saban’s run at Bama elevated the entire university including enrollment, appliacations, and as a result the overall academic quality of the student body. But don’t take my word for it there have been plenty of articles about it. P.S. Dabo has done the same for us

I already posted the actual rankings to show our prestige as a university has fallen since 2009. It's true enrollment grows. When you have a good sports team, more people want to go to a school.

But here's where you make your mistake. If applications increased but the student body remained the same size, then prestige would increase, because you'd be more selective and the average student would be higher quality. But that's not what happens. Instead, schools want more money and so they grow their student body to match the increased applications. So they're not more selective. And more importantly, the smartest kids are not choosing college based on football or basketball. So you're accepting more students and those students are lower quality. You're dumbing down your student body, as can be seen by the fact that 15% less of Clemson students were in the top 10% of their class compared to 2009.

What a stupid opinion. Athletic prowess is inversely related to athletic accomplishments. Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Oregon. Excellent athletic programs but mediocre, poorly-ranked schools. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Cal Tech, Stanford. Mediocre or even terrible athletics but the top universities in the world.

Our ranking as a university has fallen dramatically over Dabo's tenure. We are obviously a much better school athletically since 2009. However, in that time, we've fallen in the national university rankings from #52 to #80 and from #19 to #39 in the national public university rankings.

They really should be, and mainly bc for all of these years there wasn't a fee for students to attend the games that their school sponsors. They go to class one day and friends could plan to take in the game on Saturday, and the next day they are told that $150 bucks a semester equaling $300 bucks more a year to their tuition that is already grossly overpriced.

With as much as 4 year colleges cost these days, and with the colleges having people always bringing up things to get more money from the students and their parents after already paying way to much. Students and parents should make an effort to see if they could be better off by just going to an occupational school where they can earn and receive an associate degree in only two years.

I really don't think that the plan was for parents and students to be in debt for 10 years after attending a 4 year college. Price gouging for a college education has reached levels where most people just can't afford it anymore without being in severe debt for 10 to 15 years after graduation...

Going to college now has out priced a 4 bedroom, 2 full baths nice home on 1 acre of land...

Back when I was a student, we paid a $75 Activity Fee, and got an Activity Card. It was used to get Football and basketball admission (tickets), plus baseball, soccer, etc….. Also for Fike activities.

It was not a big deal. I guess they dropped the fee over the years?

Tuition and other fees are 10-20 times more now.

Revenue sharing starts next year.

That means up to 22% of revenue can be shared with revenue generating sports (Football, BBall & Baseball). To pay this, there is going to be tremendous pressure to fund the Non Revenue sports.

This (roughly) 4 million in revenue will be there difference in keeping the athletic Dept in the black and the non revenue sports from going to the chopping block.

Athletics fees are nothing new. Clemson was just very, very late to doing this as we had IPTAY instead.

“ Other public colleges or universities in the state charge an average of $1,000 for athletic fees, and Clemson’s archrival, the University of South Carolina, charges its students an athletic fee of roughly $150”.

So Scar charges $150 and there are a total of 13 public colleges and universities in the state. One is MUSC which doesn’t have athletics. Clemson can’t be included in the average as it didn’t have the fee until next school year. So that leaves 11 to help come up with this $1000 average. In order for the average to be $1000, the non-Scar colleges and universities need to average charging their students a $1085 athletic fee.

Coots and soon to be Clemson charge $150

Meanwhile The Citadel, Coastal, College of Charleston, Francis Marion, Lander, SC State, USC Aiken, US Beaufort, USC Upstate and Winthrop are charging on average $1085???

That makes zero sense.

List of South Carolina University "athletic fees"

1

Oct 18, 2024, 5:14 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson BOT votes to mandate an athletic fee on students ]
Reply

"Other public colleges or universities in the state charge an average of $1,000 for athletic fees" This is simply not true. Most include it in the regular tuition or include it in fees for other services.

------------

University of South Carolina students pay an Athletic Event Fee of $86.50 per semester. This fee helps support facility upkeep and grants students access to athletic events and the ticketing lottery for major sports like football, basketball, and baseball

South Carolina State University (SCSU) includes an athletic fee as part of its general tuition and fees. While the specific athletic fee isn't itemized separately, the university's total cost of attendance includes coverage for athletics among other student services

At The Citadel, the athletic fee for cadets is part of the overall cost structure. Specifically, there is a Deas Hall Fee of $75 per semester for cadets, which supports athletic and recreational activities on campus. This fee is separate from other tuition and room-and-board charges, which are significant due to the military and leadership training provided at the school

At Erskine College, athletic fees are part of the general tuition and fees structure, though they are not specifically itemized as a separate athletic fee.

At Furman University, there isn't a specific athletic fee charged separately to students. Instead, the comprehensive tuition includes access to a wide range of campus services and facilities, including athletics.

At Anderson University, there is no separate athletic fee explicitly listed for students. Instead, students pay a general set of fees that cover various aspects of campus life, including athletics. For the 2024-2025 academic year, full-time undergraduate students are charged a Student Services Fee of $385 per semester and a Student Activities Fee of $160 per semester

At Bob Jones University, there is no separate athletic fee specifically for general students. Instead, a Program Fee of about $1,000 per semester for full-time students covers a range of services, including the use of athletic and fitness facilities, library access, and campus network services. This fee also includes tickets to the Concert, Opera & Drama Series and admission to intercollegiate sports games for students enrolled in six or more credits

At Lander University, students are charged an athletic fee of $113 per semester for full-time students.

At Coastal Carolina University, full-time students are charged an athletic fee of $225 per semester.

At Francis Marion University (FMU), students are charged an athletic fee as part of their overall university fees. For full-time students, this fee is part of the general fees that help support athletic programs and provide access to events and facilities.

At Winthrop University, students are charged various fees to support services and facilities, including athletics. While there isn't a specific "athletic fee" itemized separately for all students, general fees for full-time undergraduate students include approximately $1,258 per semester, which covers a range of student services, including access to recreational and athletic facilities

When I was a graduate student at Clemson in the 1990s we paid an athletic fee - if my memory is correct, I think it was $60 a semester. It didn't guarantee us seats for football or basketball; I bought tickets for the football games or got them as gifts from players I tutored. I did get into baseball games for free, which was what made me happy.
I had friends who were undergrads & I thought they said they were paying an athletic fee to be able to sit on the Hill for free???
I could be wrong about the undergrads, but I know I paid an athletic fee - I was in my late 20s, early 30s, and responsible for paying any tuition & fees not covered by my scholarship. I know what was on those bills from Clemson.
So when did this change that it's now changing again?

That was a student activities fee and included access to Fike, football tickets and intramural sports.

Seems it would mean at least $6 mil annually since the fee is charged each semester (x2:)

Instead, they should reduce the inflated salaries of the Marxist professors.

The money generated by football should be plenty to fund the other sports and fund a reduction in tuition for students. Putting a another fee on the backs of the students is ridiculous and using the mantra "everyone else does it" is disappointing.

What some of you, most of you< fail to realize is that non revenue sports have to rely on the leftovers of revenue sports money to get scholarships. With no scholarship money, there is the possibility that a deserving future Olympic champion will go to another school that does have the money. I ran track for Clemson and my first year, all that got paid for was my books because that was all that could be allotted from leftover money. Didn't matter that I was ranked top 5 in the world coming out of high school. Many non revenue athletes drop out of school because they can't afford it. This money will help provide for them. It's a shame the majority of people go out of their way to talk about how they want an athlete to represent Clemson, the students, and culture. But, don't want to help them stay there to do so. This is not an opinion. This is from personal experience.

In the 2022-2023 fiscal year, Clemson University generated approximately $158.3 million in revenue from its athletic programs. Football was the largest contributor, bringing in around $70.6 million. Clemson’s expenses for the year were $143.4 million, leaving the athletic department with a surplus of nearly $15 million. This revenue places Clemson among the top athletic programs in the ACC

Where is this money going?

I haven't seen anyone talking about IPTAY

Is this projected (or has it even been considered) to have a potential negative effect on student IPTAY membership? I would wager that many of us were IPTAY members as students and continued that into the current years. Starting students into IPTAY is one of the smartest things Clemson has done over the years for continued athletic success. I'm concerned this may have a net negative impact going forward, both in dollars and IPTAY participation, but it will be years before we see if that plays out.

I’m ok with it. If you breakdown tuition cost I’m sure there are other junk fees in it. That is like paying 78 bucks in 1995 when I was there. Whatever

Clemson BOT need all fired. While my dad Tom Kirby still alive he made sure IPTAY and will all his Clemsob pushed against that. To make it fair now my NIL athletes by their own tuition plus room and board. Clemson President’s contract extension garbage too. He has made Clemson’s word mean nothing now.
