Brings to Clemson: Shipley fully earned his tag as an “all-purpose back” in highly-productive sophomore and junior, state championship seasons at Weddington (NC). As a sophomore, Shipley accounted for 1,876 total yards (1,417 rushing/393 receiving/60 kick return/6 passing) and 22 total touchdowns (19 rushing/6 receiving/3 passing). As a junior, those numbers ballooned to 2,655 yards (2,040 rushing/582 receiving/23 kick return/10 passing) and 40 touchdowns (30 passing/8 rushing/2 passing). Shipley hasn’t shied away from comparisons to a Charlotte-area idol in Christian McCaffrey and he’s eager to show his versatility as a runner and receiver on the college level.

Depth chart fit: We wrote this time last year about the running back picture and how Travis Etienne was likely NFL-bound, but now it seems like that really is going to happen as the record-setting back has further shown his versatility and also added a Clemson degree. Shipley is coming in with another talented back in Phil Mafah and enters a Clemson running back room probably lacking a clear heir apparent to Etienne at the top of the depth chart.

Tony Elliott on Shipley: "He's a man of many talents. Once he gets to the green grass, you're not going to catch him. Has tremendous speed. Really good quickness for a guy his size. Can run through tackles very, very powerful. Once he gets a step on you, you're not going to catch this young man. I really, really like his temperament and personality. He's a guy who has 'scatback' ability but he's got the size and the power. Doesn't mind the dirty work when he needs to. Has the ability to play receiver and really, really, really good hands out of the backfield. He's going to be a guy who is going to be a matchup problem for a lot of people going forward."
