Swinney discusses Jacoby Ford's future in football

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney talked to the media on Wednesday night and updated the status of Jacoby Ford's professional football career.

"Jacoby is still training and still hoping that he will get picked up," Swinney said. "I think he has made his decision too that if he doesn't get picked up soon then I think he is going to go start over in Canada and go build a nice career there. he's 28 years old. He's clocking 4.2's out here."

Swinney knows that the NFL is a tough business and veteran players can sometimes be expendable for cheaper rookies.

"He's a perfect example of what happens sometimes," Swinney said. "He really should be playing in the NFL right now. I have never seen him in better shape, never seen him more focused. But he is a perfect example of that league in that once you got 4 or 5 years you have to make a certain amount of money. So it becomes a business decision a lot of times where they will take a rookie and they can pay him the minimum.

Swinney pulls for all of his former players in the NFL and in other professional leagues.

"I'm excited for him because he is one of my guys," Swinney said. "He did a lot of good things in his NFL time and hopefully he will get another shot. But he has a lot more football left in him. He and Tajh (Boyd) will have a chance to train together and throw the Canadian balls and all that stuff. We will see where he ends up, but if he doesn't get picked up his plan is to sign with someone in Canada and go from there."

Ford has 57 receptions for 848 yards and three receiving touchdowns and also has four kickoff return touchdowns during his NFL career.

At Clemson, Ford and C.J. Spiller became the greatest all-purpose duo in NCAA history. Ford was also the 60 meter indoor NCAA Championship in track during his college days.

Ford was drafted by the Raiders in the 4th round of the 2010 NFL draft (108th overall).
