Spurrier talks Clemson and Watson at impromptu press conference |
South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier called an impromptu press conference on Wednesday afternoon to discuss several topics including his coaching future with regards to his age, the media, Clemson and
Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson "We got a dang good team this year, and I just want our fans to know it," Spurrier said. "Don't listen to our enemies. Don't listen to them and you'll be fine, and they'll try to tell you they're not their enemies too. They'll try to tell you they're neutral, and this guy Spurrier's lost it. We haven't lost it. And we've got a dang good team coming, and we're fired up and will be fired up when that team from Clemson comes in the last game of the season," Spurrier said. "Their quarterback has already challenged our guys and says we can't beat him ever. So we are looking forward to that challenge also. Maybe this rivalry will get back like it was several years ago." Watson's comments about South Carolina were from a conversation he had with his high school coach from Gainesville. "My high school coach was a big Clemson fan and I told him, as long as I’m the starting quarterback here, I’m not going to lose to South Carolina," Watson told USA Today's Dan Wolken back in early May. "It’s a big rivalry. Who wouldn’t want to play in that game? It was a family decision. They put it on me, and it’s what I wanted to do. Of course people say I have a future down the road (to protect), but I live in the moment and that moment was then and I wanted to play." It also appears that an article titled 'The great Spurrier is surely nearing an end' by AJC's Mark Bradley (printed two days ago by the State paper) drew the complete ire of Spurrier. "When I got there, we beat Georgia two or three times," Spurrier said. "A guy from Atlanta wrote that Spurrier will flame out. ‘He’s arrogant. He’s cocky. He can’t recruit, because nobody likes him, and he won’t last down there.’ Well, after beating them 11 out of 12, he quit writing that. Yet, our local newspaper, the same guy put something in our paper talking about I’m too old and we’re in trouble. That’s allowing our enemies to write about us in our paper, and I don’t like that." Spurrier finished the strange presser by asking a media member when he could see the interview on television. “What time’s it going to be on the news? I want to go home and watch it,” Spurrier said. After all that, now watch South Carolina go 7-6 again and Spurrier retire. ¯\_(?)_/¯ So Spurrier, who admitted in January that he'd considered retiring, is ticked off that people are using it against him in recruiting. Got it Guarantee you that Spurrier press conference is better than #Sharknado3. But the movie about sharks inside a tornado will make more sense. I really do believe Spurrier - right now, today - wants to coach 4-6 more years. But what if it continues south? It's all subject to change. Can't wait till Spurrier finds out about Mark Richt's new guest column, "All Hail Georgia and by the way Spurrier is retiring" in The State. Admire Steve Spurrier's feistiness at 70 but one would think someone his age might be a little more "presidential" about criticism. Spurrier's enemies list (revised): 1. Sand traps 2. The AJC 3. Georgia 4. NFL defenses 5. Tennessee's recruiting 6. You
