Swinney on A&M player picks, team mindset: Tigers 'did their talking on the field'

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney heard some of the noise out of College Station leading up to the 24-10 win for the No. 1 Tigers over No. 12 Texas A&M.

His players did too but they chose to keep the talking to the playing field.

"Our guys, they showed up with a mindset. They were ready," Swinney said on his call-in show Monday. "Those guys (Texas A&M) had kinda talked all week long. Our guys just went about their business and did their talking on the field. We all know what happened last year. We didn't play very well in the fourth quarter and they threw for 400 and something yards and had over 500 yards. So for our guys to go out there with a very young group and hold them to two yards a carry and 289 total yards.

"So I'm really pleased...The effort. The will to win. The energy. The excitement of just going to play - I love this team and where they are at this standpoint. Now we just have to become more intelligent and more consistent and more detailed. If we do that, we have a chance to have a heck of a group."

Swinney is looking for his team to take another step starting with the trip to Syracuse this week.

"We're a long way from being a championship-caliber team," Swinney said. "We've got to become so much more consistent. Way more detailed and just that killer instinct at times. We've got to get better. There's still a lot of teaching and a lot of learning to go on with this team right now...I think that we controlled the game against a very good team and were not even close to playing our best football.

"That is encouraging. If we continue to grow and learn and apply the things that we're learning -- we're going to get better. I am excited about it."
