Purple Finch are around right now. House Finch are around all year. Here is a photo I just snapped to help all interested know the difference.
Purple Finch has more color on the head and upper body. They have no belly streaks where as the House has many streaks.

Thanks Tugalooriver** ___ this past year, I had some major health issues, that took me off the golf course for awhile - hence, I got to reading your old blog, about all those birds, and "stole" a bunch of your photos, for reference. Then, I started ""feeding the birds"" on my back deck with left over cornbread & crumbled up crackers ---- which led to, buying feeders, seed, and putting out ""water plates"" & such, I just got in a 50lb. bag millet, and they are going crazy !!! I do most of my watching, with my binoculars now, but think they will get better use to us moving around in the house soon. We have two pair of the House Finch" -- a bunch of the Gold Finch, showed up, after I put out the millet. We've got 4 pairs of Cardinals - I have seen a small green bird that looks like a female, Painted Bunting. Lots of others, but I don't have to tell you**** Plan on making my first ""Homemade Suet" soon -- Put two suet cakes on a feeder and had a "coon" take one home with a few weeks back!!

If it “identifies” as purple, then it’s purple. It’s science.

Thanks for the picture! In Austin, we're seeing lots of Goldfinches, Carolina Wrens, Cardinals and Blue Jays, but no Purple Finches. The Goldfinches are hitting my Nyjer feeders pretty hard--I've gone through almost 5 pounds in three weeks. They seem to like these tiny seeds as much as I like Cheetos. lol

Do you have purple martins? My Dad used to make homes for them from gourds and build multi-level wooden houses for them. Evidently they eat mosquitoes which was very beneficial where we grew up on Johns Island.

I do not, but have had up a house for years. Now is the time to attract them as they come up river looking for a spot. Either you get them now or you don't get them till next year.
