Will the 105 roster limit be horrible for walk on's?

So I was just thinking about this. With the increase in roster limits, how many kids that could go to D2/D3 and play will be convinced to walk on at a D1 school and try and earn a scholly? Further, how many schools will be dirty and cut that D2/D3 kid to make roster limits in time and if/when they get a better D1 transfer to fill that spot?
If I had no scruples or a soul, I would try and get everyone that I could get that were D2/D3 prospects to walk on and earn a scholarship, then recruit to position needs, and dip into the portal and get who I could and kick off the walk ons as I filled those positions with better players from the portal and recruiting. Just as long as they met the 105 deadline, they could run through walk on's like a meat grinder to feed the machine. It just kind of scares me how this may (and probably will turn out).
Am I wrong about this? What would stop a coach/institution from doing this?

The roster total will be limited to 105. The scholarships available will also be 105. This will pretty much dissolve walk on's from the sport. If a coach grants 105 scholly's, no walk-on's can come into the equation.

Well it can be 105 walk-ons but the roster can't carry 135 like we have now. Obviously Dabo being the fan of Walk-ons, I am sure he will probably save 5 schollies for them which and fill the other 100 with recruits. This is speculation of course but we know how Dabo thinks.

You can't give a player a scholarship then take it away next week if you find a better player.

105 limit in college

Question, is there a 10 man practice squad?
🤣
In essence, if you can play D1, you on the team otherwise go D2/D3 and show out and jump in the portal. Meritocracy at its best.

Or the alternative - Renfrow would have been on scholarship all along, since more are available.

Yes you can have walkons. You can have 105 walkons. Or 50. Or 3.
The roster limit is 105. You can give scholarships to as many of them as you want to.
But, as you noted, the SEC is not immediately jumping to that limit.

Thanks, I had not heard that.

So, that means the rules are.
1. NCAA set scholarship limit at 105. 2. NCAA set practice squad at 105. 3. NCAA gives schools the freedom to offer fewer than 105 ships. 4. SEC has decided to cap scholarships at 85.
I wonder how long that will last when some B1G team offers a ship or 4 or 12 to a player and the SEC can't offer those players a ship because they already have their 85 limit.

#1 is not semantically correct. There are no scholarship limits any more, for any sports.
There are now roster limits, and schools can decide how many players (and which ones) on each roster is awarded a scholarship. There is no minimum.

That is another question that hasn't been answered.

At least, not as I have seen.
Can the SEC allow 20 players to practice without them being on scholarship?

There will be no walk-ons.

Only 105 will be allowed to practice. All those will be on scholarship.
Dabo has asked questions that no one has given answers too at this point in time. He said he hopes these questions are answered soon. Among them are
1. When will we have to have the roster set at 105? Opening day? Start of Fall practice?
2. Will there be a cut down day, NFL style. Can we have 130 on June 1st, 120 on August 1, 105 on opening day, or will we have to have 105 on some arbitrary day in the summer?
3. What about injuries? If a guy is injured and out for the season, can he be replaced on the roster (like the NFL) or will we just have fewer players at practice? (There is no practice squad in college, unlike the NFL, so where would these replacements come from?)

It is at the discretion of the school/conference how many scholarships are offered per sport. You absolutely can have walk-ons.
