Why does Ohio State call themselves “The Buckeyes”?

If they are officially the “Bobcats”? I hadn’t really thought about it much but that comparison roster that Snowtown posted really opened my eyes.
I guess it’s one of those dumb things where they don’t want to go by their official name, like how Virginia wants to call themselves the “Wahoos” rather than cavaliers.

You have confused two schools. Ohio University are the Bobcats. OSU is not. The Buckeye is the state tree.
