When you lose 20 and sign 20 portal players every year of course they have to be on the field. We retain talent, and we don’t have portal players making plays because we don’t have 20 portal players. If we did, then we would. Math bro. And just because they’re from the portal doesn’t mean they’re magically better than a player who isn’t.
I will continue to explain things to you like you’re 12 until it sinks in.

because they need to fill absolute needs due to a few guys players leaving the program. Elite teams can stay elite with this practice. But just by virtue of replacing players it doesn’t mean they’re getting better.
We have tried to fill very minimal needs in the last 4 years and broke thru this year. The fact that we didn’t lose 10 guys and replace them with 10, that doesn’t somehow mean it make us less good. We retain talent. Good players who are not in need of being pushed to the side. Nothing we’ve seen on the field at any point suggests we would have magically won the LSU game or stopped the Troy first half from happening… if we only used the portal. Nevermind there’s no room.
And then some teams have 20+ player turnover every year. They have no choice but to replace all of them from the portal. Just because they replaced 20 with 20, that doesn’t mean they’re automatically getting better and could in fact be getting worse.
There is no empirical evidence to say the portal is making any given program better.

Our biggest problem thus far in 2025 season has been substandard play from our pre-season Heisman Troohy winner senior QB.
IYO, should we have gone to the portal to get a high priced QB?

irreplaceable piece to the puzzle.
Just look at our record vs mediocre + teams over the last 4+ years...........so yeah, if Dabo was willing to go out and get a real QB from the portal then more power to him.
Same w/ Runningback. A failed WR as the starting RB at a program like Clemson is a problem.

Both were picked up by Brent Venables this season - both came in from Wash State - and frankly both were likely needed to save his job and program. Mateer will be in the running for the Heisman. Far from a malcontent.

That, and the portal has not changed the trajectory of ANYONE. If you’re elite and supplement needs effectively, then you might stay elite. If you lose 20 quitters a year and sign 20, generally speaking you haven’t changed anything.
It’s a false narrative to say the portal has changed any team, including us and out limited use.
It’s not like we are retaining scrubs. Lot of teams come after our guys, but they stay here.
The portal has not transformed anyone.

It actually has made mediocre teams better, hence why some of the “also rans” in the middle of the ACC are doing better. That Duke team that beat us was filled with some difference makers for them that came out of the portal.

We retain players. We had many average talent players that returned with experience and same average talent. The debate coming later this year is whether the staff can properly evaluate talent and develop those with available ceiling. In this era of rev share payments tough decisions about who to pay needs to be made. 105 get full scholarships. Some get good paychecks too. Some need to be encouraged to seek playing time elsewhere once their lack of development has been identified. They take away opportunity to increase the talent of the roster.
If the TP and NIL hadn’t come along, I firmly believe Dabo would be reloading the roster (after the Covid talent dip) the way he was during the playoff run. However, he’s managing the roster like it’s 2018 and showing loyalty to preferred walkons and providing early offers to brothers of current players that perhaps may not be the best available to recruit and sign.

Get one too many bozos and you'll end up with a team of dudes tryna fondle the nut sacks of their opponents. Can't have none of that up here in Clemson

You see nutcrackung hits that you see from other teams, and conclude that’s why Clemson is soft.
What you don’t see from the opponent … this is the case because you only see most opponents one time … is that the many of those nutcrackung tacklers get unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and targeting penalties more often than Clemson’s defenders.
Show off tackling leads to losses, because they extend the drives from and give excess field position to opposing offenses.
BTW, if you bothered to look at the stats, we win the TO battle in both of our games this year. Now THAT is my kind of ‘soft.’

It has a lot to do with Venables leaving as he held players accountable and he was fiery. However, we are clearly missing in recruiting or we can't develop players or both.
Utilizing the transfer portal like other power 4 programs do, would be helpful to the program. Dabo has proven how little he uses the portal players we have and they must need to be here for at least 2 years for them to be able to play it seems. His loyalty is going to be his downfall. Mark my words.
