What's the word on the street regarding WR coaching?

Before you read anything else.... see this. I realize we had a massive flood of injuries at the WR position last year that set us back tremendously. It was a HUGE factor in our lack of production. I understand this.
Ok now... we have had an extremely high standard for our 1st 2nd and 3rd strings. We have developed five-star talent out of walk-ons and 4-stars. We have had excellent blocking, and WR recruiting has been absurdly good for over ten years.
Blocking, catching, route-running, and recruiting at WR has WAY been down since 2021. Are we sure that injuries account for 100% of this? Or is it possible Dabo has something to keep an eye on at that coaching position?

that we had a lot of injuries at the WR position last year. This set us back tremendously, and was a significant reason why our receivers didn't produce as well.

play, and poor QB play...
a whole lotta stuff went wrong offensively. IF you want to narrow it down and make it more simple than it really is.. blame the 1983 scoreboard that was in the stadium last year.
that way i can promise you change is coming

The most significant reason for our WR's not being what they were, is that WR Coach/OC Jeff Scott left to be the HC at South Florida. While Jeff Scout was recruiting and coaching our WR's at Clemson, we were WRU, and our WR's core hasn't been the same since Jeff Scott left... IMPO, that is the real truth!!!!

Tyler Grisham has been WR coach for two seasons and three recruiting cycles.
In those two seasons we had the most productive passing game in Clemson history, and another with tons of injuries and a barely functioning QB.
In those three recruiting seasons we've signed six top-40 receivers and five top-20.
In the entire CFP era we've signed three 5-star receivers - Deon Cain, Tee Higgins, and Derion Kendrick. The last was in 2017 (Higgins), and Scott didn't sign any 5-stars in his last two seasons recruiting.
There hasn't been any drop-off in WR recruiting or on-field play. We had one season where the QB struggled mightily to get the ball to WRs, and we had more injuries at that postion than any other time in the Swinney era.
There is nothing to support your post-Scott doom and gloom. Agreed?

The word from me is that it all has to get better. Since Amari/Tee, there hasn't been a real "dude" on campus to stretch the defense. Everyone hoped Justyn would be that guy last season but he was rusty and inconsistent and ran wrong routes and dropped passes. I also think it was a mistake to put him in the slot to begin the year. He just never felt comfortable there.
Everybody hopes that Ngata can get there, but he has just 47 career catches after three seasons. EJ Williams has been hurt a lot. Troy Stellato has been hurt. Beaux Collins is a good possession guy, but I don't know that he is that dude in the Nuk/Sammy/Tee mold. That's on recruiting to me. It felt like Clemson went after guys that were 6-3, 200 and didn't exactly fit the speedy mold the last few years, at least when it comes to the outside receivers. I like Antonio Williams (but he's likely to be in the slot). The guy that has the best chance to be that "dude" is Adam Randall, and he's hurt. So that is gonna have to wait til midseason or so.

Yea, basically, we got too enamored with the big 50/50 possession receiver. That would have maybe been fine if it worked out, but it didn't and we didn't have the faster shifty game breaker to fall back on.

Everything you said is exactly how I have felt. Nate Joseph looked to be a stretch the field guy but we just lost him. Got to do better at recruiting the WR position. Possession receivers absolutely have their place in our offense. Big body that can high point the ball and tower over DBs. But if they are going to be that guy they need to have that toughness to just beat up the DB.
But these fast WR types are highly sought after now and seem to be the players drawing the highest NIL $. So it’ll be tougher for us to get those guys than it was in the past.

I'm super Bullish on Antonio Williams being a big boon in the slot. Get us some third down conversions, some nice goal-line movement...oh boy. And if he's got a split with Will Taylor, and Taylor can do the same...should open up the outside lanes!

Thank you for so eloquently laying out what I was trying to convey in yesterday's thread that Leon Trotsky posted. OSU now taking the WRU mantle. One reason because they got the guy we wanted desperately. Fleming. And to a lesser degree Gilbert to LSU.
Then in 21 - egbuka (Brooks and Franklin either had no interest or we had no interest because neither received offers)
22 - we got our guy but it was slim pickings for an outside speedster
Obviously, I failed miserably in that thread. Had we gotten Fleming, Gilbert, and Egbuka, our mantle would be retained.

As I said, since Jeff Scott leaving, the recruiting, and coaching up of the WR's hasn't been even close to the same!!!

I mean, the love of it is the root of all evil. It appears to be that along with Trump and Russia and Republicans.
Yeah, that's it ... it's the NIL-Trussipublicans!

Who remembers when TNet wisdom was that hiring The Scotts

was a huge mistake by Tommy Bowden?
Who remembers that elevating Jeff Scott from the kick holder position to grad assistant and then to WR Coach was considered bit of a stretch, and then making him OC was thought to be just plain ridiculous?
Then ... somehow, he became irreplaceable.

My sources (Tyler Grisham) tell me to watch Beau Collins. He has developed into a leader and he's only a sophomore this year. He thinks Ngata will step up this year too if he can stay healthy. I think we'll be ok. As stated in some of these posts, a lot went wrong with the offense last year so to target one group is not a good analysis of the real issues. I will say DJ will need to step up his game because when I saw Cade Klubnik practicing his footwork at 10:30 on a Friday night a couple weeks ago he was lightning fast. This kid is going to be good.

recruiting targets
we had a that period of taking too many project players with huge upside but not really ready to play Elite College football. Anjou Anjou is the perfect example. you add him to a class of other top end players in hopes he is ready by Jr or Sr year not as primary target for the class.
Ngata, Williams and Stelleto need to stay healthy and produce to pair with the Collins' and Spector and Taylor.
With our expected running game and emergence of the TE - that group of WRs should be able to move chains and get wins. If they stay hurt or have more dropsies issues then we are not going to have a good year.
of course this all assumes that the delivered pass is accurate.

I agree with everything said here. There are a host of problems plaguing our passing game and most have been covered. I'll only add that I look for Dabo to get more involved than he has been with a more of a hands-on approach. That's not a knock on Grisham. He may settle comfortably in to his role but his plate was perhaps a little to full. This is in Dabo's " wheelhouse ". It's how he used to butter his bread. He'll get involved and help get it corrected.IMO

Here's what's crazy: At the beginning of last season we had TWENTY wide receivers on the team.
I'd wager that most Clemson fans were familiar with about 7-9 of them.
