What position group is our biggest question mark going into the 2025 season?

For me it’s our RB group. With special teams being the other question mark. (Specifically our punting and field goal blocking.)

I have confidence with our OL, WRs and QB but the running back room is where we will be seeing newer faces this season. I think that our offense will be great this year with the talent and maturity we have at QB, WR and OL, But we do need to at least have a decent running game for us to truly be unstoppable this year. I’m cautiously optimistic that our running game will be at least good but right now it’s a wait and see.

As for special teams I’m really hoping that our field goal blocking is bettor this year. We definitely have our kicker but we need guys to block for him. Punting on the other hand is a big question mark. The punting game may be our biggest weakness this season. Jack Smith will prob be our starting punter but he’s got competition from walk ons including former Clemson soccer player Charlie Reed. Dabo just put Reed on the team a few weeks ago. So that may mean that they are looking for a bettor punter. The punting game is very underrated but if we want to go far this year then we need a decent punter to put our defense in a good position to give our offense good field position.

Now on defense the secondary for Clemson I think will be bit of a question mark with Khalil Barnes being the only established safety we have. The other secondary players will be younger players. We should be great on the D Line though.

With all the uncertainties, the RB game is the one I’m most looking forward to seeing play out through out the season.

What position group are you guys keeping an eye on this season?

Safety- Barnes regressed big time last year…let’s hope he rebounds with the new DC…and then another youngster needs to step up to fill RJ Mickens’s former role!

Barnes is better at Nickel.***

Very true statement. Barnes is great in coverage close to line of scrimmage. And when running freelance in the secondary. However, last year he was fair at best in one on one coverage downfield. If he gets back to his Freshman performance we will be tight in the secondary IMO. If you look at the stats our pass defense was not good last year either. I believe we will tighten up on the run game, get more pressure on the passer. This will lead to better downfield coverage. If all holds true our defense will be stout.

Im really not concerned about the running backs. If the O line is good they will be good.
The safties and linebackers really need to improve. The last 3 games of 2024 they didn't play well. The talent is there let's hope it was coaching. Im still not sold on kicking.
His get off time is slow and his kicks come out low. Let's hope he improves.
Punting has to improve.

OL. Always OL. RB is irrelevant if there are no holes.

For me it’s safety. RB’s will be fine just because the O-line is going to be the best we’ve had in the Coach Swinney era.

The horrible field goal blocking and at best average punting.

lol. That went away and its not like that wasnt an anomaly.

Kickoffs - great
FG - we may have the best kicker in the country
Punts - we were average last year, and punting never hurt us in any way.

I just don’t get these odd special teams concerns. It’s not even on the radar in reality.

It seems this could be an all or nothing type season for them. Game 1 could be a life saver for a lot of people.

We don’t really have any experience at punter this 2025 season. The best we have right now is Jack Smith with our back ups being low experienced walk on punters. Jack was the 3 year back up to Aiden Swanson (who was the starting punter from 2022-24). Jack has only punted 5 times in his Clemson career. So who ever is the starting punter for us will be a less experienced player.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You dont need experience as a punter.

Dude why are you being such a #### to everyone ? Punter is a glaring weakness and if you dont see that then you are either really dumb or didn’t watch much last year . Our starting punter is a lifetime backup that couldn’t beat out any of our punters the last few years . That should scare everyone. If you aren’t worried about punting then you are clueless . Blocked field goals were a problem all year and you actually asked “ what is wrong with special teams “????

LB is a huge issue . We have no depth there at all . Woodaz was wildly in consistent and slow and unless the Bama portal guy is the real deal , we are down to 2 LB’s . LB is an area we needed more portal help for and for some reason didn’t address it.

The secondary for me. The talent is there but other than Terrell and Hampton I'm filled with wonder. I wonder who will step up and I wonder how they will hold up. I'm optimistic that the front 7 will be much improved and cause tons of pressure taking the pressure off of the back end of the defense. We'll see.

I think the RB room will be serviceable and that should be all that is needed with the QB and WR's starting each week. An average run game, just enough to take the edge off of the opposing D pinning their ears back with blitzes and I think we destroy teams.
