What does this Danny Ford Video mean to you?

I was too young to understand what was going on. But, you can tell that he was loved on a level like no other coach ever at Clemson.

Still have bad memories about the forced resignation….

then the Hatfield era. Although I have to say, Ford pretty much forced the AD and Prez's hand in the forced resignation. After all a few weeks before the forced resignation he was blasting the AD and the Prez over something that got banned by the NCAA a year later. And he blasted them at a speaking event in Cootlumbia of all places.

Bobby Robinson and the administration really screwed the pooch on this situation and Ford was sick and tired of being their #####. He didn't bow down and kiss their &$&@ and in te end, it blew up in the media. That could only end badly as it did.
Sure, Ford shares some blame, but he was defending his program from being held to a higher standard than UGA, Alabama, LSU, Florida, Ohio Stare, et al and thus tying his hands so we couldn't stay competitive.
There were no winners in this. And we are just now starting to come out of the 30 year wilderness of mediocrity thanks to this whole debacle.

I'm a big Danny Ford fan, but he has a serious problem of putting his foot in his mouth. Bobby Robinson and Max Lennon didn't do anything while Ford was the HC to make Clemson less competitive. After all look at the talent we had Ford's last season. That 1989 team was one of the best Clemson teams, and really should have been undefeated in the regular season. If you remember correctly, Hatfield was able to go 8-3 in 1993 off of the strength of the players Ford recruited.

However, the administration was so skittish thanks to all,of the NCAA attention that they wanted to exert their power on Ford to essentially neuter his aggressiveness in recruiting and in how he handled the team.
It was a clash of wills and personalities and the administration felt Danny had gotten too big for his britches.
If Robinson had been a person Danny could actually respect, it would have turned out differently. But Robinson was/is a perfect example of a privileged little snot who was promoted to his highest level of incompetency and should never have had that job in the first place. Ford knew that and was not in any mood to take dictates from such a sniveling little snot who didn't have a clue about the real world in which college football competition was having to be waged in that era.

that Robinson was adamantly opposed to Lennon's decision to force Danny out.
He was also opposed to hiring Hatfield as Danny's replacement.
As AD, Robinson became the scapegoat but the reality is, the decision to oust Danny was made by Lennon and a few members of the BOT.

The 1990's should have been Clemson's best years. Instead, FSU filled that vacuum.
My friend's dad handled the steroid/Joe Morrison scandal in Columbia as an attorney.
Let's just say the SMU scandal that nuked it's program could have happened at USC but the scandal died another way.

team. There was a lot of internal things going on. Danny was also attacking the administration in open forums across the state and cut any olive branch before it could be extended. Then, another NCAA probation was being whispered in the dark corners of the NCAA. It was not a good time for Danny, Danny's family, or the Clemson family.

Just asking out of curiosity. In what way did Danny lose control of the team? Certainly did not lose control on the football field.
In regards to Bobby Robinson, what a wuss. Glad he is no longer around

Even if we win a national championship. College football is so different now, especially with the conferences competing for billions in TV money. The teams are also more equal than ever. Throughout the 80's there were perhaps 5-6 teams that ruled college football. Now there is a conference that rules it, and there are perhaps a dozen teams or more that can realistically win it all.
We were in rare air when Danny was our coach. We kept assistants much longer, and the coaching carousel was not what it is today. To establish a dynasty you have to get good coaches, and KEEP them. That's harder to do than ever today. There's too much money going around to have just a few teams at the top. Some day colleges will figure out that you throw out the most money for good coaches, and keep them. THEN, after you achieve success, use the extra money that comes in for facilities. That's what Alabama has done. At the time everyone thought it was ridiculous the amount they paid him to get him from LSU. Their gamble has paid off. I'm glad to see Clemson step up to the plate with our assistants salaries.

Swinney has the player's backs and they love his passion. No one want to let him down or put him in a bad situation. He will get his chance to be the second coming of Ford.
I would like to see him move to AD one day and let Chad take over the team, but I'm dreaming up a way to keep both here for a long, long time.

It was the start of a 20-year down period for Clemson

football. If you think back to the 80's, we were light years ahead of the curve in college football. We had IPTAY and the means and money to create a top notch stadium back when there were relatively few in college football. IPTAY really wrote the book for fundraising in college football. In the last 20 years everyone has caught up with us and some have surpassed us with facilities, fund raising, etc.
We are coming back after another young assistant coach was promoted from the ranks to head coach. There are many similarities between Dabo and Danny.
Ford was the man who put Clemson football on the map. He did it before there was a love affair with the SEC, before ESPN took off, and before college football really took off with the money it has today.
The world of college football is so different today it would be hard to match what he did because the circumstances are so very different now. Gone are the days when perhaps 4-5 teams ruled college football, from various conferences. Today there are perhaps a dozen or more teams that can, in any given year, compete for all the marbles.
Going back to Danny, the reason he was fired, as I understand it, had to do with athletic dorms. He wanted to build a set of dorms for athletes, and he and Robinson got into a very heated argument about that issue. That ongoing argument eventually led to coach Ford's being fired. Ironically, the NCAA banned athletic dorms a few years later although they were common in the 1980's. USC had "The Roost" and Clemson basically had just Mauldin Hall. Danny wanted a specific dorm built for athletes, and for football players and if we had done that we would have been burned financially within just a few years. Yes, Danny was wrong on this issue, but that was no reason alone to fire him. I think the animosity between he and Robinson on this issue got very personal, and that's why he was fired.

Presidents Clemson has ever had. Barker is in top 5 - even though I have criticized him.
If Barker can somehow get Clemson back on track to serving the kids of South Carolina first, he would get a statue of his likeness on campus one day.
Speaking of which, we need to do that for Danny near the stadium to stick it in the eye on Lennon and Robinson and the BOT members at that time!

traded cows with him for years. I have heard him farrtt and cuss like he never used a dictionary. Danny is not god! He was an excellent coach, but he had his foibles. And it was a much different culture then than it is now. I still like him and deeply appreciate all he did for Clemson Football. I didn't ask the questions, but to place the blame completely on the administration (one of which I absolutely abhored) is just not fair.

Fish and milk will kill you. Snakes don't bite underwater. Aids spreads in public toilets. If you don't have sex for 7 years your cherry will grow back. The world is flat. Smoking Marboro will make you sterile. She won't get pregnant if you pull it out. I'll only stick it part the way in. The check's in the mail.
These are facts if you believe the old wives.

My grandpa died a long time. I regret his untimely death and I still miss him. But I am mostly over it.
I saw Coach Ford about a month ago. He seemed to be doing well. And the Tigers have won 21 games in the last two years, including an upset of 7th ranked LSU last time out.
Life is good.

don't remember the great Clemson teams during Danny's time, but it was awesome. I feel like we may be on the cusp of the 21st century version (things are VERY different now), but next season will tell us for sure.
The other thing you young folks don't remember is when Frank Howard had an office and did a piece every week during the football season for the Tiger Tailgate show. We need something like that for Danny. He needs to be in the ring of honor, not just as the coach of the NC team!
Danny was human, and he did make mistakes, but his firing was one of the worst days in Clemson football history. We need to make it as right as we can. He has said that he won't be used as a PR tool. We need to REALLY make him part of Clemson again. It is his destiny!!!!
