We'll never see a defense like 2018 again

2019 LSU team gets a lot of love for being the best team ever, but nobody ever talks about how 18 Alabama was supposed to be the best ever, and Clemson dominated them. Lawrence, Higgins, Ross, ETN, that offense was great . . . but the key to the team was the beef up front on defense. We'll never see a group with that much talent and experience ever again . . . plus all the guys in the secondary . . . Mullen and Terrell? Goodness. What a phenomenal team.

Goodwin was never going to produce at the level that those teams did. Neither will the next guy. Hopefully, we get better, but that team was just ridiculous. #42 should be retired.

right up to the point where Clemson spanked that @$$ in Santa Clara. Some of their talking heads still harbor a lot of animosity, hostility, and resentment because Clemson made them look like a bunch of mindless uninformed clowns.

I agree. That said, the game has changed a lot since then. (Sadly)

2019 LSU may have had the best offense ever but their defense was very pedestrian so hard to crown them the best team ever.

That 2018 defense would have kept that 2019 offense in check. We win Natty number 3 if we still had that defense

2019 LSU.. the best team money could buy. To this day (and forever forward) - I will always pull against Coach O, Joe Burrow and anyone associated with that team. OBJ openly giving players cash on the sideline, Burrow stomping around in a hat that said "Big D1ck Joe", smoking cigars and trying to fight security that told them they couldn't smoke in the locker room.. LSU hired sleazebag Coach O to get them a trophy, and he did. But nothing about it was on the up and up. LSU went from a team I grew up pulling for to a team I hated in one season.

I mentioned in the 44-16 thread, how amazing that California trip/game was; NoLa and that game was the polar opposite. Even beyond the game, NoLa is a crime-ridden dump, a cesspool of the worst of humanity. I'll never (willingly) go back.

LSU defense had some really key injuries that year

They were getting healthy and playing much better at the end of the season. I think they were quite underrated at that point.

I have made the same point about Goodwin not having the same level of talent as the Venable defenses due to NIL and to a lesser extent covid. Even so, it appears Goodwin was not able to get the most out of the level of talent he had available.

Mukuba openly saying that while Clemson was one of the best times in his life, he didn't feel like he was personally pushed hard enough, athletically.. and coming from a top defensive player, currently playing for a National Championship, while we watch from the sidelines - that says A LOT..

I know people who said the same thing about past defenses, dreams of national championships and so on. Those guys were good, the coaching was good...it was all very special, but so long as Clemson (or any individual or entity) is giving real effort, never say the best is in the past. Its almost certain to see you looking foolish when the prophesy is proven false.

Yeah it would've been nice to see us face LSU with that front 4, the fact we made it all the way back after losing that entire front 4 was an accomplishment in itself. It still pisses me off that LSU didn't even get going good til they got away with the push off from Chase on Terrell for that first TD.

Yes. It was so special. As impressive as the offense was with Trevor, the defense was awesome. Like someone else mentioned, Dexter didn't play in the Championship game. Such a great year.

I FULLY agree 1000%… the #42 should absolutely be retired.

It’s a shame it hasn’t been.

I seriously don’t know if Clemson football has ever had a better leader as a player than Christian Wilkins.
