Spin what? You slow or something. Apparently have no clue on who we had in the game on D.
That secondary vs the best QB we will face this year. Taking the win and happy about it!

Don’t think jury is out any longer. 4 games and it shows there is no teaching by Defense coach. It will only get worse. Our secondary looked li Ke they never been too a practice and Goodwin is lost. No idea what to do. He is the bust.

Where have you been?? Swinney, other assistant coaches, & the players have all commented on the significance of Goodwin as Venables' right hand man! Nobody is saying (that I'm aware of, anyway) that Goodwin was responsible for Venables' success! I'll always prefer Venables as our DC, but he's the head coach at the school where he originally built his reputation. Move on!
I don't know if Goodwin will be successful, but I'm certainly willing to give him a legitimate chance based on his previous good work. Additionally, "In Dabo I Trust"!

With his #### in your mouth.
Goodwin can’t recruit. He clearly can’t coach with a top 5 defense, talent wise. What is it that you do here, Wes?
Stop being a shill for a multi million dollar DC.

I used to feel good about Goodwin
Sep 24, 2022, 5:16 PM

I'm sitting at neutral now. He was aware where we stood at CB today but didn't scheme anything to give the freshmen help. Giving up 6 TD passes is not acceptable under any circumstances. I can't remember two CBs on the same team getting owned so much in watching 50+ years of football.
Secondly, it seemed as if the RPO completely confused the defense the entire game. That shouldn't happen.
He's a big step down from CBV but how big is to be determined.

He should have adjusted to the 2 high safety look much earlier. We didn’t have Booth and Goodrich back there, 3 current starters out, so why put freshman and Davis in that position if he’s so brilliant?

But Venables had like three games since 2015 that he needed to apologize for. 2016 Pitt, 2018 A&M, and 2018 South Carolina.
Goodwin also has three games...in his first four. Furman, La Tech, and today. Yes we had backs out, but our D line was healthy and stacked yet still got pushed around today. Wake rushed for 1 yard against liberty yet I believe they had almost 100 just in the second half today.... mostly off the little cute delay run that seems simple enough to stop after the first few times. This is where I'm concerned. This is supposed to be the best front 7 in America.
But we will see what happens next week when Dennis the Menace comes to Town.
Go Tigers

Strange as it may seem, I agree with T3.
Winning is hard and Clemson had a laundry list of problems and coaching staff losses to overcome last year. You do not replace a couple of long-time coordinators who you have won multiple national titles with who have gone on to be head coaches at major programs themselves - I mean, Venables has Oklahoma looking like a playoff squad already - and suffer no dropoff. Still, most areas are notably improved.
Also, you gotta look at circumstances. Where there's a fire, are there injuries? And hey, you look and there's multiple injuries all over our secondary...I mean, our safety room looked like a MASH unit before the season ever started. And there were what, three freshmen out there today? You put them up against a guy like Sam Hartmann - who is 10th all-time in ACC history and had the 6th best season ever in ACC history last year - up against a pack of bright-eyed newbs and they're going to get torched. No surprise there. Hartmann can flat-out play.
In football you play with what you got, and we had 18-and-19-year old kids out there in our secondary today playing against guys headed to the NFL. There's going to be a learning curve and they were up against an all-time-good ACC QB today who could finish his career as the #2 ACC QB all-time behind only Phillip Rivers. It's in reach for Hartmann. He could well pass both Trevor and Deshaun next week. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/conferences/acc/leaders/pass-yds-player-career.html
Yeah, the kids got skunked. It happens when mismatches happen and they were outmatched today.
In the meantime, our offense is looking better every week. We rolled up 589 yards on O today and it's still not quite firing on all cylinders. Yeah, we need to do better on D. But folks...circumstances.

Hey Q, why didn’t he move to the cover 2 with 2 safety’s back overtop to help earlier? Like, BEFORE, all the freshman and backups were blistered badly? That adjustment late in the game saved us from defeat. Maybe he refused to believe they weren’t capable of handling that QB and WR group with man coverage?

I don't know what he was looking at or thinking. I definitely am not loving what I've seen thus far with Goodwin thus far but we were up against a big-time, veteran talent in Hartmann and he had some receivers that will play Sundays to throw to...put 'em up against a secondary like ours and we're going to have problems.
I think he may have simplified too much and it does look like he's not near as quick to react as Venables was. But we don't have a full report card yet either and that secondary is in rough, rough shape this year too...it is what it is at this point, and now we gotta see if we can plug some of those holes on the fly.
We usually do. No team is perfect; this one assuredly isn't. But we're 4-0 and have a chance to be 5-0 next week with our two toughest opponents behind us. I'd certainly have taken that before the season started? Wouldn't you?

I'm haven't given up on Goodwin, but needs to own this game. The first thing out of his mouth should have been a thank you to the offense for baling his butt out. As I recall we still had a pretty good defense last year despite injuries. We played a 3 man front most of the time 2 years ago, because of being thin up front. His job is to adjust to the players he has and the offense that he is playing.
The one thing that I would like to know about today is how much 2 gap technique was the d-line playing today. You aren't going to get a big push if you have to be ready to go either way. I am not sure that the d-line isn't getting some unfair criticism for the game that they played. Doesn't clear up any questions with the coaching, but it might explain why we didn't get more pressure on Hartman.
A lot of people are having knee jerk reactions to the game today, but we should admit that we should have played much better defensively against Wake. You could argue the point for Furman and La Tech as well. We can beat Wake with this defensive performance, but if we have any hope of a championship we have to improve.

BVs DBs got burnt a lot.. with a lot more taken and experience back there. BV coached that 2016 defense that couldn’t stop an average Pitt team.. WF is one of the best offenses in the country. Our dbs were bad real bad and Goodwin is new to calling. BV had years of experience and got beat from time to time by a solid passing game plan. DBs will get better and so will Wes

Looking over the highlights, some of this might be on the DL giving Hartman too much time. He was throwing dimes too, crazy good game by him.

I think our blitzes sometimes are just pointless. Why send guys straight into the A or B gap to immediately get stood up and be taken out of the play completely? But I also think that dates back to Venables’ time at Clemson. Not saying it happens all the time, but just seems like we immediately take some of our own guys out of the play immediately when we send guys right up the middle.
As far as Goodwin goes, in my opinion I think some of the trends and ways offenses are exploiting the defense is just a take what they give you approach. At some point our guys have to feel confident enough to disguise some looks and move around fast in the scheme without thinking. Recognize and react early, fly around and know what your assignment is.
I still believe Goodwin should be up in the box and Conn should be on the field. Seems to me like Conn has the coach skill of talking and communicating with players and Goodwin should be the eyes up top
