New house, no central A//C, so I have to figure out either window units or portable units. Leaning towards portable units because they also dehumidify air, I don't think window units dehumidify but maybe I'm wrong

I just got my LG dual inverter air conditioner installed and has an efficiency of 15 which is unbelievable so it takes very little electricity to operate and it cools down fast

With a portable, you'll need to run that HOT air discharge tube somewhere.

Better than window unit...way cheaper than a traditional air handler / condenser set up.
Quite, efficient, reliable.
The equipment isn't much more expensive than a good window unit. The install may get you a bit shouldn't be more than $1500 , especially if you put it on an exterior wall.

I bought a Midea 12,000 btu window inverter style unit last year when we were going to get slammed by hurricane. I could run it off my generator if we lost power for days. I had a GE 8000btu but it quit working in 2-3yrs as I always test them for bit before storms in case I need another.
I have been super impressed with this Midea unit. Very quiet, easy to install and its power usage was half the GE with more BTUs. Matter of fact, last year when it got super hot, I turned it on to see how well it worked and it pretty much cooled my entire downstairs easily. Then noticed my elec bill was like $85 less that month because I didnt use the big ac heat pump.
My parents use window units in Iowa and I told them they could only replace with this style, I have been impressed.
The u-shaped inverter style.

DPeach- FYI, the 350sq ft for 12k btu on link is incorrect. It is supppsed to be 550sf, look at the specs. My downstairs is much larger than that but it keeps all the main living space exact temp so I could be comfy during hurricane. I still have to use my big unit for upstairs.

Growing up in Anderson County, we stayed cool with an attic fan. Not sure how we survived the daytime heat (only used it at night) or the pollen it had to pull in the house. As a young teen, we added a window unit A/C but only ran it a few days per year and only during the day as it ran up the electric bill. After I moved out, the folks put in central A/C and bought a riding mower (which we did not need while I was pushing the mower).

As a young tad, the only cooling we had, was a window fan that we used to exhaust the hot air out of the of the house, and pull cool air in the other windows. It kept us reasonably comfortable on most nights, not so much on others, but there were some nights we woke freezing cold. ah, but those were the days.

Window units can be loud. Research them well.

large window fan, so we opened all the windows and slept with our heads toward the footboards.
When my folks bought a larger house while I was at Clemson, it had an attic fan that kept the house fairly cool. I actually bought them two large window A/C's, which they didn't like to use due to cost, but they had central air installed with a hew furnace some years later. They didn't run it much either.
AND we had no A/C in the tin cans at CU the first couple of years I was there, so I survived with a breezebox fan. Funny thing is even today, I don't run my A/C continuously, and the past two months, my electric bills have been under $100. lol

I'd put a small desk fan inside my freezer and leave the door open.
