Should make for some intriguing matchups

with nontraditional teams playing each other! I’m all for it! Nice to see Clemson has some representation on the CFP board this year too, even if he has to recuse himself from all discussions involving our beloved Tigers. But we should have a decent chance to get in every year in this format, I would think. In the words of Lloyd Christmas, “So you’re telling me there’s a chance…?” Let’s goooo!!

Even when we were in the final four each year I was one of the few wanting expansion. Now I’m the dog that caught the car. I’m expecting good things and I look forward to some upsets (but not when we are favored…insert smiley face).

So, you approve of 8 or 9 SEC teams being in the playoffs, bc you know that is what a 12 team playoff is all about. That conference begins each season with about 8 or 9 teams in the top 20, and the way that the committee kicked FSU out of the playoffs as a undefeated team without much of argument around the country, that gave the committee permission to kick any undefeated teams of their choice out of the playoffs, and just bc there will be 12 teams now, that won't stop them from doing the very same at WILL!!!

We will be at 14 teams soon as well.
The committee did the right thing in not putting FSU in the four team made for tv post season FBS tournament to determine the champion of the “College Footbal Playoff.” Putting Alabama in was the right decision. There were no set rules for who got selected. Sure there were guidelines but each year the committee highlighted reasons for their decision. Each year when the fourth team was not clear cut - the reasoning/emphasis changed. The committee was/is there to give the best match ups (if they can). Some years there hands were tied.
And the FSU example (and TCU/Baylor in year 1 CFP as an example as well) show why I have been an expansion proponent for the beginning. At least now the P4 champions are more or less guaranteed a spot - so FSU would have made it under the new rules. You should rejoice and be glad in it.
In the end it will typically be SEC Champ + 2 or 3 at large B1G Champ + 2 or 3 at large B12 Champ + 0 or 1 at large ACC Champ + 0 or 1 at large G5 Champ
Some years the B1G will have more teams than the SEC or vice versa. But yes - you are correct - the B1G/SEC will always have the most. It still is a made for tv/streaming invitational. ESPN is paying $1.3 Billion a year to the “College Football Playoff” to broadcast the games. Peoples with the moneys makes the rules.
But heck yes I approve. This is better even though the rich get richer. Eventually the SEC and B1G will have their own playoffs with just their teams. Like Thanos, it is unfortunately inevitable.

No conference will qualify automatically and no limit on number of conference representatives…
So… what happens first, the SEC gets all 7 non-automatic playoff spots or the SEC gets left out of the playoff entirely. I’m going with the former if ESECPN has anything to say about it.
Go Tigers!

I still worry about the first part of that statement, "No conference will qualify automatically". They say that and also say the "five highest-ranked conference champions". That sure sounds like automatic qualifications. Sounds to me what they are saying is if say a conference champion isn't highly ranked then they could leave them off. More BS pandering by the CFP.

No. That means the 5 highest ranked even if 4 of the 5 aren’t the Power 5.
Which will never happen. The ACC/SEC/BIG10/BIG12 champs are all essentially guaranteed in.

I read it like you, and that seems logical, but this process sometimes leaves logic in the dust in order to reach their "private" goals. Sadly, I'm not sure we can trust them to do what really is right, rather than what meets their agenda.

I think we learned last year that the $EC is never going to be left out of the playoff$. If they weren’t left out of a 4 team $cenario, they certainly won’t be denied multiple berth$ in an expanded format with an expanded conference. Not $ure why that i$.

"to now include the five highest-ranked conference champions, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams as determined by the CFP Selection Committee."
I'm overthinking this....but what is the difference between the five "highest-ranked" conference champions vs. just the five conference champions?
Is it a Power 5 vs Group of 5 thing?

Changing from a 6-6 to a 5-7 just means only 1 G5 team will make playoffs this year, not two.

Since the implosion of the Pac-12, there are only four "Power Five" conferences. That means that the ACC, B1G, Big XII, and SEC will all get a conference champion in, plus the highest ranked Group of Five champion. This past year, Liberty would have gotten in had the 2024 layout been in place, I believe.

.... all it will do this year is eliminate the second highest ranked G5 team and replace it with either an SEC or B1G team. The path for an ACC team to make the playoffs this year is simple - win the conference.
A 2 loss SEC or B1G team will easily be chosen over a 1 loss ACC team that did not win the conference championship. (Heck, a 3 loss team would be picked over an ACC team.)

Is that a bad thing, or even something most people actually care about?
I celebrate & watch the whole sport. When the AAC was often outcompeting our own league, it was thrilling football, straight up.
I'm just not sure this new rule guarantees non-P5 teams being left out or guaranteeing their replacement is from the SEC or B1G, especially in a world where teams like Clemson & FSU are still in the ACC & Notre Dame is still independent.
I disagree a 2-loss or 3-loss B1G team will definitely be in over a 1-loss Clemson with a win over Georgia & FSU, for example. I actually would bet Clemson would be in if that were the case.

If the six-champion, six-at-large format had been in place for the 2023 season, Florida State would still have been screwed by the CFP. No, they wouldn't have been left out, but they wouldn't have gotten a bye PLUS they'd have the hardest row to hoe having to go through four conference champions to win it all. The playoffs would have looked like this:
1 Michigan (bye)
8 Oregon 9 Missouri
5 Florida State 12 Liberty (based on CFP rankings, I assume that's where the lowest seeded conference champion goes)
4 Alabama (bye)
Then the other side of the bracket is...
3 Texas (bye)
6 Georgia 11 Ole Miss
7 Ohio State 10 Penn State
2 Washington (bye)
Count: SEC.....4 B1G.....3 Pac12...2 Big12...1 ACC.....1 CUSA....1
After 2024 realignment: B1G.....5 SEC.....5 ACC.....1 CUSA....1
Yep, let's name it the B1G/SEC Challenge. :/

This makes no sense. How could they play the quarterfinals AND semifinals on the same day?? Either the 4 quarterfinals games, or the 2 semifinals games will have to be moved and not played on New Year's Day.

There will be at least 7 teams with 2 losses and maybe 8 or 9. It will be interesting to see this works out but I don't see much chance for a non power conference team plus Notre Dame making the top 12 teams. There will be no Cinderella stories like basketball.

Yep... That should get 4 teams in out of the SUC and B1G. The rest will be from those 2 conferences probably. The AP poll will make sure the SUC and B1G teams are highly ranked all season. College football is going down the tubes for many reasons, but it all comes down to one thing... $$$$$$

Bad before just wait. If you don’t think they won’t start skewing it all year you are crazy. As always 4 loss sec teams will be ranked high enough to make sure other SEC teams look better on paper. Now that Big 10 is full in with Fox and not ESPN it will be worse. My guess each year you will see a min of 4 SEC teams and more likely 5 after they start playing with the rankings at the end of the year.

Daredevil is correct. At least 5 of the 12 will be SEC but probably more like 6 or 7. SEC teams don't fall in the rankings much when they are defeated which, of course, is by design. This is why I don't want anything to do with this corrupt conference. Just my opinion.

anyone pay attention to dates and days of the week for the games? This is going to suck as far as travel...
Thursday, Friday Semi-Finals
This also adds one more travel date for the second round... teams could be crossing the country weekly... this is going to be expensive for all fan base's involved...
The economic winner in all this is teams 5-8 who get to host 1st round home games... financial windfall.

What if no G5 champion is ranked in the Top 25? No playoff qualifier? Or does the committee pick 1 from the rest?
Last years Final CFP rankings (* Conf Champs)
