I think the biggest thing was that it had no bearing on the play, Peter was on the backside, all he had to do, if anything, was get in his way. These blocks need to be outlawed, yes, Mafah's as well.

Wren isn’t exactly known for being a classy bunch

Did he grow up a Gamecock? Or was he just angry he didn’t get a look from Clemson?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You gonna be fair and say the same about Mafah v UGA?

I mean, it happens. I guess when our guy does it it's all like whatever he made a mistake. Let the other guy do it and it's all ZOMG HES TRYING TO END PWOO'S CAREER!

I highly doubt either did it with the intent to injure.

It wasn't a chop block. Woods wasn't being blocked by another player when #87 dove at his knees. It did seem like a dirty play, but I don't think it was illegal. Cut blocks are generally allowed in college football. Mafah was flagged against UGA because he came from the side, but #87 came from the front.

In gridiron football, a chop block is an attempt by an offensive player to cut block (block at the thigh level or lower) a defensive player while the defender is already engaged by another offensive player.[I/]

Here’s the NCAA’s full rule dealing with blocks below the waist by the offense:

Linemen with initial position completely inside the tackle box may legally block below the waist inside the tackle box until the ball leaves the tackle box. All other players are allowed to block below the waist only if the force of the initial contact is directed from the front. “Directed from the front” is defined as within the clock face region between “10 o’clock and 2 o’clock” forward of the area of concentration of the player being blocked.

Summing that up, for a block below the waist to be legal, it has to:
- Come within five yards of the line of scrimmage
- Be from the front, unless it’s by an interior lineman

Whether it wasnt within 5 yards if the LOS

Whether it wasn’t within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage, or from the front or side or any of that other fine print of the rules, I don’t care.
Anybody that clearly aims his entire torso directly to another player’s knees should be ejected. …and that’s exactly what #87 Eli Wilson did to Peter, look at the video.

Look, I was ready to be outraged too, but per the rules (that I just read for the first time yesterday) it appears to be a legal block. Now maybe it shouldn’t be, but that would require a rules change.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well maybe you should put it forward to the rules committee

this off-season because that's still a legal block under the current rule block.

It was "legal" but dirty. There are at least four reasons I wouldn't compare it to Mafah's block.

1) There was no impact on the play
2) They already had an unsportsmanlike for an unnecessary cheap shot on a kickoff
3) He launched at Peter's knees with all he had (look at the video)
4) Mafah plays for Clemson (kidding)

it’s the result of playing inferior competition

it was the only way he could block him

had probably already been chewed out by his coach for being ineffective
