The Gospel of John the Baptist

Luke 3:7-14

John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked.

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”

So he basically gives four main points here to avoid judgment…

1. Produce good fruit

2. Give to the poor

3. Don’t steal

4. Don’t lie

Do you think that was all said in one meeting?

Or was Luke giving a summary of the life of John the Baptist? Also, since Herod is lumped in with that passage, do you think he was there too, and had John imprisoned that same day?

I don’t see how the same person could have said what John the Baptist said in Mark 1 and what John’s gospel has him saying in John 3:36…“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.”

It’s kind of like the synoptic gospels vs John debate on whether Jesus said he was god. Matthew Mark nor Luke have him making those kinds of statements. In John he’s there at the beginning of time and equal to god.

The synoptics also record Jesus giving similar answers to what John the Baptist says here about eternal life and avoiding judgment. It’s about how you treat people.

Yes, every day is Easter. MissTulsa's phone rang on her side of the bed at 4:45 this morning. We were 250 miles from home. Nursing home calling. Her mom passed away about 10 minutes before. Lonely feeling for Miss, that far away, mom gone. Miss had grieved for her mother for a long time, not so much that she was sick, but that she had endured a horrifically hard life with perseverance and beauty, giving her daughter a life she could never have, a daughter she entrusted to me. And now we were in a bit of a hurry.

I threw the curtains back on the picture window, a faint pink on the horizon beyond a pasture of cattle. Behind me I heard, "It's Easter morning. I just remembered that my birthday fell on Easter, once, when I was maybe 6. Mom made me an Easter birthday cake, green colored coconut for grass, jelly beans for eggs. Even then I knew we didn't have the money for it. I wouldn't let anyone cut it, and we never did eat any of it. I had forgotten that cake until now. I dont remember what happened to it. I'm glad she died on Easter morning. She didnt deserve her salvation any more than anyone else, but she deserved this."

Your mother in law was a great person and deserved salvation im sure of it. She definitely didn’t deserve eternal torment. The worst person in the world doesn’t.
