With San Francisco beating Boise, and barely losing to Memphis, I tend to believe they are a solid squad.
It's looking like the sunshine slam on Monday / Tuesday could be a springboard for the year for the basketball team. Drop the game to San Fran, and we likely end up playing Fordham. Win against San Fran, and we likely get a 6-0 Big Ten team in Penn State, would be great for the resume.
I hate to think of this stuff so early in the season, but if we don't pick up some quality OOC wins we may be in trouble this year. Last season when we had a rough stretch in ACC play we were really able to fall back on the wins against Bama, Boise, South Carolina, and even TCU when NCAA tournament talks started up.
If we don't get the win against San Fran, and at least a close loss to Penn State, things start to look a bit bleak. We'll be definite underdogs against Kentucky, and maybe underdogs to Memphis. South Carolina isn't great but road games are always tough to win.
All of that to say, we really need to win our Sunshine Slam games to get some breathing room in my opinion, especially after dropping the Boise State game.

Agreed. For us to feel good about our at-large NCAAT chances coming into ACC play, we need to win both of these games. One loss would be survivable, two would be a disaster

Another option would be to enjoy the season and let it play out without fretting over a tournament several months out based on assumptions.
Either way.

I've been following basketball for many many years, and I agree with you, but it's not how the tournament selection process sees things sadly. It seems that out of conference play gets valued higher than conference play in recent years, and it's important to play well early in the season.
I can see it now..... "Clemson is 14-6 in the ACC, but with the ACC having a down year, their losses to Boise and San Francisco call into question their legitimacy as an NCAA tournament team".... yada yada

Great post 48..
This is the part of the season where teams separate from being legitimate teams securely in the Dance to teams fighting hard in their conference to being on the right side of the bubble.
Really need at least that San Francisco win, and hopefully the Penn State game too. I think this team will at least get 1 win, if not both will have to be at least get 1 of Kentucky or Memphis if not both. I think the fact that San Fran beat Boise State will get this teams attention and they will be ready. San Fran had to play a tough game last night in the loss to Memphis and now has to fly to East in just a couple of days and play Monday.
Go Tigers!

Sucks that we dropped the boise state game. Losing to both boise st and san fran would not be good.
The good news is that boise is in the mountain west and san fransisco is always rated highly in the net. Both of these games will likely be quad 1 so if we drop them, there is still tome to make it up.
Im glad that we scheduled 3-4 quad 1 games in the non-conference.

I don't think this team will lose to them on a neutral court in Florida. SFU has just couple of days to fly to Florida on the East. this team will be highly motivated after that Boise State loss. The Dons struggled vs a good defensive team like Memphis last night. Clemson will offer that same challenge Remember they beat Boise on their home court not on the road or neutral court.

At least if we beat San Fran it works out for all three teams:
- San Fran beat Boise - Boise beat Clemson - Clemson beat San Fran
Then we're all even in a weird game of transitive property gymnastics! ">
