Student attendance in college football is declining...

http://online.wsj.com/articles/at-college-football-games-student-sections-likely-to-have-empty-seats-1409188244?mod=trending_now_3
"The growing number of empty seats in student sections across the U.S. is a sign of soaring ticket prices, more lopsided games and fewer matchups against longtime rivals, and the proliferation of televised games that make it easier than ever for students to keep tailgating long after kickoff."
Greed can catch up to you. Keep squeezing and the students will find something else to do. Then they graduate and those few Saturdays in the stadium are just not a big deal to them. The connection to their alma mater suffers.
Michigan is especially impressive in its short-sightedness:
"The attendance slide also was blamed on an increase in student ticket prices, which jumped to $295 from $205 last year, as Michigan replaced a long-standing policy that rewarded seniority with a plan that gave students general-admission access. A midseason survey by the college's student government showed that 76% of student season-ticket holders disapproved of the new plan.
Student dissatisfaction led to another change that takes effect at Michigan's home opener against Appalachian State University on Saturday. Michigan students are now assigned seats based on how many sports games they attended the previous school year. The athletic department, which formed a student council for advice on ticketing issues, also decided to offer discounted, single-game student tickets."
$295 to watch your own team play? A program that forces people to go to other games to be eligible for tickets? Ridiculous.

if Clemson (among others) isn't very careful, they risk pricing the average family right out of the market.

Looking at my copy of the Orange experience, there are almost as many iptay donors as purple donors. Champion and tiger are not far behind ?
But I don't know why people think Michigan represents all of college football.

Clemson Ticket Policy.
Aug 28, 2014, 9:42 AM
|
|
Does Clemson's ticket policy still provide for a "free" football ticket to any student that wants one? Back in the late 90's if you wanted to go to a football game you got a ticket. Now I know "free" is relative because a portion of the mandatory student activity fee was given to the athletic department. Just curious if our student ticket policy has gone to a different model.

students still are eligible for free tickets ("eligible" because there are only 11,000 tickets) if they've paid their student activities fee. That fee is apparently STILL only $40 (that's what it was in the 90s when I was a student!) which I find VERY impressive (if accurate).

As a current full time student tickets are still free as long as long as all your fees are paid.

In 91 and I know it was more than $40 when I graduated in 99. I know because I had to pay it separate when I dropped to part time. I want to say it was closer to $200.

At Clemson, you have the option of including an "activity fee" (around $40?) with your tuition. This activity fee covers tickets to all athletic events and a membership to use Fike. This is active as long as you are a full time student.
Tickets to home football games are not guaranteed, as the allotment of student tickets is about 11,000. This has never been a problem for me (thanks IPTAY).
I don't think Clemson student attendance will ever be a problem as long as this system is in place.
