Yeah, their QB and best WR were portal guys. We should go after playmakers and skip the family and friends plan.

I agree. We always have 5-10 extra scholarships...

...to give to walk-ons and coaches' sons that could have gone to blue chip high school recruits or quality transfer portal players. Then, we wonder why we have depth issues when a few players get hurt.

Yes hunter worked out but how many walk ons did we take before we hit on 1. Taking walk ons versus taking a proven transfer who has already proven he is a playmaker at the collegiate level is not even in the same argument. That’s like buy a lotto ticket versus going to pick up a check. Anyways GO TIGERS!!!

Hunter had a scholarship offers from several schools including App. You think Dabo's kids play football at any other FBS school in the country ? They'd be lucky to see actual meaningful snaps at an Div III school.

How many of the 5 star, blue chip recruits, and transfers are going to come to and stay at Clemson while playing on the Scout Team for 3 or 4 years. Only 22 starters and few more for special teams run out on the field to start a game.
Those preferred walk-ons are talented and have offers to other schools but choose Clemson. And if you have ever had the privilege to be a Scout Team member and what it's like day in and day out, you would understand those scholarships are earned.

...besides at line specialist? Are athletic scholarships rewards for hard work or elite athletic talent? Are academic scholarships given to the hard-working "C" student or the talented "A" student?

In your world, how many of the of the 85 blue chip scholarship players would play and contribute each week? Is it 40, 60, 70? Kind of like now maybe, the top 60 (+/-) 4 and 5 star players play, then the rest after them. A bigger revolving door would be needed if all 85 were "blue chippers". Its the same at Bama, UGA, and every other Div 1 school. The main thing is getting the best 60 - 65 you can get and keeping them replenished every year.
