school recruiting and could have even been considered his top choice until we lost out to Saban and Bama. We had the need for his position/skill and he was looking for a new school so our requirements met.

This us where I have said we should have been looking for players since the inception of this crap . . . and player we were recruiting and is now in the portal, should be a strong consideration player.

You do realize that pursuing a player via the portal is different than going to a dealership and buying a pre-owned Range Rover, don’t you?
Clemson simply cannot ‘go to the portal’ and pick up a player. The sought-after player has equal say as to whether or not he will come to Clemson.
Therefore, it should not be surprising that a sought-after portal player who had Clemson among his finalists when he was a HS senior would have appreciated the cultural aspects of Dabo’s program. Therefore portal player sees that the same HC that he liked as a HS senior is still at Clemson. So when we expressed interest in him, he reciprocated by confirming his interest in us.

Nah. You can usually tell the kids that have been tampered with. They hit the portal with a “no contact” tag and have a hole the next day.

Joe Burrow and Cam Newton (and several other players and non QBs) never had an impact either prior to transferring to their eventual playoff/national title teams.

Clemson example to support your general example.
Back in 1995, we arranged for a highly regarded former HS recruit to transfer to Clemson. The subject transfer player was an undistinguished LB who played his first two years in college at Michigan. Due to the transfer rules at that time, this undistinguished LB from Michigan was moved to the DT position at Clemson.
The player was Trevor Pryor. Mr. Pryce played one season for us in 1996, rocked out, entered the NFL draft, became a first round pick, and went into a prolific NFL career with multiple Pro Bowls as a DT.
Trevor Pryce may well have been the most impactful player in Clemson history who spent only one year of eligibility with us.
Here’s hoping that Jeremiah Alexander has a year in 2025 similar to what Trevor Pryce had in 1996.

How much is a special team player worth in NIL? He may turn out great but 2 years at bama and not playing meaningful snaps is not a sure thing. Previous 5star out of portal doesn’t always mean he is gonna be great.
