They were doomed anyway - too many bikini try on haul videos on YouTube
In an era where any schmo with a cell phone camera can be a “sports journalist” the overhead of running a salaried national operation isn’t going to be sustainable- Woke or not

Motor Trend was a distant third in the car magazine game when it was print only, but the adopted a pretty ambitions online presence and surpassed Car and Driver and Road and Track in the process. Seems bizarre that SI chose to go the way of Autoweek.

mail order company.
Just trips my trigger when anyone does the 'go woke go broke' ####. Plenty of 'woke' success if you really want to look. Just check out some of the stuff on your favorite streaming channels.

Sears were the two retail leaders, MW maybe bigger than Sears. Most people know this story, that at the end of WWII, MW saw the need to be 'prudent and wise', managed the balance sheet well, etc., while Sears thought the opposite, that there would be a buying boom. They borrowed all they could and built tons of stores. So, to your point, it is surprising that a generation later Sears played the part of MW.
The hardest thing in the world, at least for me in personal life, is to distinguish principals from methods, so new opportunities can be separated between forward thinking and wrong headed. Is the lesson of Sears to go borrow money, or to understand why you're there? It's part of why we argue about Dabo and the portal, I think.

Using "woke" as a way to describe something you disagree with isn't meant to point out a problem with the hope of finding an actual solution. It's a rhetorical crutch that helps people not have to critically think as much.
It's much easier to identify things that conflict with your personal politics and desires as "woke" and just leave it there than it is to really give some good thought to the matter and maybe allow it to inform an evolved opinion. ... So let's just agree to call it all "woke" so we can go back to considering really important matters, like where to order pizza tonight for the football games.

Used to love them when I was a kid but they decided to virtue signal and DEI hire instead of just writing quality articles. Probably not a sustainable model in this era anyway but add in employing a bunch of people who should be doing something else for a living instead of focusing on quality only hastened their demise.

It always a matter of time for print media.

Like the rest of my contemporaries, I grew up on a steady diet of the weekly print edition. The only time I needed a copy of SI in the last 20 years though was the rare occasion that Clemson was represented on the cover, and then I would just go to Books A Million and buy one. I think what will end up happening is that Authentic will end up driving The Arena Group completely out of the picture, and then Authentic will re-license the name to a digital publisher. The name is too valuable for it to completely go away but I guess we'll see.

the end of Sporting News hit me harder than this one

I subscribed to both off and on over the years.
Sporting News was sooooooo good, loved that mag/paper. It had substance, not style like SI. Chock full of stats & info, not pretty photos.
Internet pretty much ended it when you could get instant box scores, rankings, stats, etc.
