Remember when David Hood asked Dabo about the ole Ball coach

Back in 2011 on December 1st before the ACC Championship game Spurrier run his mouth about the coots not being like Clemson, your very own David Hood ask him about it & his answer was a classic starting at the 1:48 point!
This is why I love Dabo!

Believe it or not I was thinking about this in the shower a couple of days ago, how it defined the difference in Dabo and the Spurriers in the world.
Great question that led to a really principled answer that made me proud to be some part of Clemson as an alum and fan. That was a special moment David Hood was able to facilitate.

Haha heck no. I thought maybe he was at first but you could tell he was spring loaded and ready to go. The next day in Charlotte we laughed about it... He asked me how many hits it got.

That’s my favorite. For all of the high profile quotes Dabo has had, that’s the right setting for me. I love watching him, the other coaches, and the player in their element after practices. That’s high quality content. That was an absolute gem.

Light the fuse and step back! He was pissed at you for asking the question - "I think it's ridiculous that I get asked that question on a Thursday night..." but glad you let him get it off of his chest. One of, if not THE greatest Dabo rants of all time. And prophetic.

Didnt we find out later that Spurrier never said that? That
Aug 16, 2021, 9:43 PM
|
|
it was Todd Ellis.
Still, he obviously expected that question, and was ready for it. We were down after losing to the c o c k s. You could just feel the pressure being taken off our team as Dabo defended them as they prepared for VT in the ACCCG.
Great move by Dabo.

When I worked for 1075 The Game, I used to have to have some good "conversations" with Duce Staley REGULARLY, but one day todd came into the building, and Duce decided to "call me out" as a Tiger alum and fan... todd makes some comment about spurrier righting the ship and how they were doing relative to Clemson, so, I reminded him that he and I should have a convo about him faking injury and leaving his backup to take that 45-0 beating in '89... he now acts like he doesn't know who I am, we always have to be reintroduced when we cross paths... LOL

Nice sentiment from Dabo. He said the obvious. South Carolina is not Clemson. Never has been and never will be.
I like it that Dabo was speaking that night at the high point in the history of South Carolina football, and yet he knew where the two programs stood in history and would stand in the future.
The last two years have not been the best ever in Clemson history, but we did go 24-3, play in 2 CFPs, end those years with a final ranking of #2 and #3. And oh yes, we beat South Carolina twice.
In the last six years Clemson has played in the national championship deciding game 4 times and we have won the National Championships twice. In my 70 year life, the only teams to have had a better 6 consecutive years than our most recent run are Alabama, Southern Cal, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Miami. And our run is not over yet.
Since Dabo spoke that night, Clemson is 112-14. South Carolina posted two of their best seasons ever since that night, but we've gone 6-2 over them. Since Spurrier noted that SC is not Clemson, the Gamecocks have gone 60-52, with 22 of those wins coming in 2012 and 2013. Yep, South Carolina is not Clemson.
The Gamecocks are have had 3 different head coaches since Coach Swinney reminded them that they are not Clemson.
Over the long term, the difference in SC and Clemson coaches could not be more different. SC hired former national champ coaches Paul Dietzel, Lou Holtz, and Steve Spurrier. When it was over for Dietzel, he went back to his favorite school, LSU and died happily an LSU Tiger. Lou Holtz left the Gamecocks and is living out the rest of his life as the Notre Dame ex-Coach he will always be while remaining intent on being buried in South Bend. Steve Spurrier quit the ##### mid-season and has returned to his home school, Florida, where he still works and where he remains the Gator he is. Clemson promoted assistants Frank Howard, Danny Ford and Dabo Swinney to be our head coaches. Frank Howard is buried on Cemetery Hill in Clemson pretty close to his celebrated rock. Danny Ford lives on his farm near Pendleton and can be seen before most Clemson home games tailgating with friends near the NE corner of Death Valley. Dabo is still coaching at Clemson and he's continues to shine as one of the best college coaches in history.
Finally Clemson is ranked as the 29th best public university in the nation. South Carolina is ranked 54th and likes to call itself "The Flagship University" of our state.
As Dabo noted, Coach Spurrier was right. South Carolina is not Clemson. Not by a long shot.
