Phoenix vs Tempe vs Scottsdale

Jan 3, 2016, 11:35 AM

What are your thoughts on these three areas. Places to go out to dinner or get a drink. Best downtown to walk around?

I love in metro Phoenix, but more specifically Scottsdale.

Tempe is your stereotypical college area, and it's good but not great. I would not recommend it, to be honest. For reference, I am 29 and feel every bit of it if not more when out on Mill Ave.

Scottsdale is where the money is. The bar district is called Olde Town and it's fantastic. It has the feel of a college area with people walking the streets, pizza joints open late, etc, but it's a young professional type area. Check it out for sure.

Downtown Phoenix is dead unless a big event is going on. During the Cactus bowl last night it was doing pretty well, but on off days it's nothing to write home about. Still I'd recommend it over Tempe unless you're in your early 20s.

TL;DR: Check out Olde Town Scottsdale

I'm already going to be staying in Tempe because

the Best Western - Tempe at the Mall has a free airport shuttle and is close, but not on top of the airport. We'll appreciate that when rolling out Sat am.

That being said, can you recommend a sports bar-type place close to there for after the game? Not interested in wall-to-wall college kids, just a spot to bask in the glow of our big win and wind down.

thks

There's a DnB type bar north of there you may check. Gameworks or something like that. If you went a little east on Baseline (like 2 blocks, maybe), there are a couple bars where Baseline and Mill meet. They're far enough south that it wouldn't be wall to wall college kids. Plus, it'll be a monday night so it shouldn't be busy regardless. Baseline Sports Bar, Final Round, and I think there's one more sports bar there. There's also a hookah bar there if that's your scene.

If you are in Tempe, you are wall to wall College Town. It is a Monday Night , so I doubt there is a huge student population out and about.

Tempe is only a 5 minute rude from Old Town Scottsdale, agree Downtown Phx would be last choice. You will see Nothing in Tempe that you haven.t seen before , but it is a great "party" strip

We're staying in Scottsdale, walking distance to Olde Town

Anything there that we should make a point to see/do?

Thanks!

If you're talking bars, just head down there and walk around. They have something for everyone: country bars all the way to pretentious tiny portioned food bars, lots of sporty bars with TVs everywhere, etc. I enjoy the tavern and Patty's, but they're all great. There's a pizza joint there that serves by the slice. Tastes amazing and is so cheap.

If you mean non-alcohol related sights, I'd definitely recommend checking out Camelback mountain. It's an easy hike up most of it with a breathtaking view of the entire valley. The path kinda wears out about a mile up, but you can go the last quarter mile to the very top if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. If you want a good pic of you holding a tiger rag somewhere, that would be it. You can actually see the Big Toaster out in Glendale from the top of Camelback.

If you golf, the Phoenician is a great little course tucked into Scottsdale. It won't be cheap right now with all the snowbirds around, but it's a good one. There's also plenty of casinos around. The best poker room I've ever played in is up on Indian Bend rd, called Talking Stick Casino and Resort.

Hope that helps a little.

Bobby McGee's restaurant is very cool --- wait staff dresses in unique character attire. Each room is unique too.

Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse is very cool too. Cowboy atmosphere. Don't wear a tie, or you will lose it and find it stapled to the ceiling.

Lots of great Mexican restaurants. Hard to select the best.

Black Angus Steakhouses are good too.

There is greyhound racing in Phoenix area too.

I used to live in Phoenix. Very unique city.

If you are in downtown "Old Town Scottsdale, you are in the premium spot in the area for everything from Fine Dining to Dive Bars, and art Gallery walk, and free trolly cars to zip you around. It is a very compact area, and is fantastic. Be sure that you force yourself to get a Picture taken in/or in front of the Rusty Spur Saloon , tiny place cowboys singing music , and a real landmark. (its just one of the things , you "have to do" if you are in Scottsdale.

Great Wine Bar called "5th and Wine" great selection good food as well.

Eat at "The Mission" dinner you probably want reservations, lunch you can get the experience for half the money. Do the table side Guac.

"Cowboy Chois" is a great eclectic type menu that is a hot spot... I would just kind of work my way through the tight downtown blocks...

All are good. Been a few times. Scottsdale is where I'll be if that tells you anything.

It's a big place, but easy to traverse. If you wanna go to Tempe, Glendale, etc...it's all a pretty short drive.
