Pete Rose in HOF?

So yesterday ESECPN had an article about the MLB lifting the ban on Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson. Now that its over, how long until he's in? Considering you can go to a game and walk into a sportsbook, this was well past due. I hear that the sportswriters that vote are petty and vindictive, so will he get blackballed too? Supposedly character is consideration too. Thoughts?

I am torn. My favorite athlete of all time. However, he didn’t want to get in after he passed. He deserves to be in it as does Shoeless

How did Pete Rose cheat at baseball?

He gambled on the game of baseball, and never on his team to lose. That actually has nothing to do with cheating at the sport, even though it was forbidden for baseball players to gamble.

The only person who officially said he didn’t bet against his team was Pete, who lied numerous times about it, and took a deal with MLB not to release the finding.
Even if he was just betting on his teams to win, that can still be bad. Imagine if the Yankees were pitching Mariano Rivera in a 10 run game because their manager had money on them winning. Or if they refused to pitch him in a close game so they could save his arm for a game where the manager has bet on his team

Didn't realize Mariano was still pitching. Talk about rubber arms.

Luckily, I haven’t had my mistakes shown to the world. Watch the man play, he never cheated. Watch all star game and he ended Ray Fosses career. He loved to win. Hope you never get exposed for your secrets

Ray Fosse had his best year in 1970 and won two championships in 1973 and 1974 with the A's. The collision was violent, but it did not end Ray's career.

Shoeless Joe may have taken money but you don't throw a World Series batting .375, making no errors and hitting the only HR in the Series. Poor Southern kid with no schooling, whose family survived in the cotton mills. Even he started work in the Mill when he was about 7 years old. It doesn't make it right but he got caught up in something out of his league.

I hope he gets in. I would understand if they still said no though. Pete should definitely be in, but they also don't want to act slack for future gamblers or whatnot. 4256 would be in there though imo, because as a player he did nothing wrong.

I think deep down he knew that as well. A shame all the way around but he and everyone since the white sox thing has known the rule and the penalty

He was a player manager for some time and he played himself in situations where there were better options to pad his stats.
I consider that wrong...

Now I need to find my 1924 Smity's Ice Cream Shoeless Joe Jackson card. There's less than 10 in any condition. Its buried in literally half a million cards in my attic.

There is punishment for wrongful acts. There is forgiveness for wrongful acts. There is redemption for punishment served.
No one died and no one was physically hurt. Price was paid.
I say let "Harlie Hustle" in the Hall of Fame.

Charlie Hustle should make it on the first vote. Sure he did something illegal, but it did not affect the game he loved so much. Unlike Bonds and McGuire, his betting did not add to his credentials.

Don't forget about Sosa. There's not telling how many players were juiced up during that period, and they were not only breaking the rules, they were trying actively to conceal it.

Man it's a tough one. They had to protect the integrity of the game by being tough on gambling. He broke the rule because of his arrogance. He knew the rules and chose to break them. I'm just glad i don't have to make the decision. Loved the way he played the game.

Charlie Hustle should definitely be in. From what I have read about Joe Jackson, he should be in as well. With all the steroid guys getting in, there's no way these 2 should continue to be banned.

Still chapped about Joe Jackson
May 13, 2025, 9:31 PM
|
|
Jackson had an outstanding 1919 World Series. He set a major league record with 12 hits (a record through 1964), batted .375/.394/.563, including three doubles, a home run and six RBIs. His .375 avgled both teams (.286 in the games the White Sox lost and .545 in the games they won). He committed no charged errors and threw out a runner at the plate.

I'm OK with it now that he's dead.
HOF to me is historical and they are both important parts of the history of the game.
