Two guys were obnoxiously talking about football where I had lunch today, most of it was nonsense but my favorite quip of this dynamic duo was “I remember when targeting used to be called tacklin!” “Yeah now they wanna get paid and not get hurt!” Heaven forbid you go get paid to do something and want to finish without severe bodily injury. Some. Peoples. Kids. 🤦🏻♂️

Sets a new precedence. But yeah you be happy about more rules that cost games. I'll be over here eating lunch with my buds yelling at clouds and thankful I grew up in world where Ronnie Lott lit people UP!

Love that dude's passion! He plays within the modern rules, but that old school fire can be seen.

Call me crazy, but I like seeing our former players come back at games. I think it’d be nice if they could you know, walk without assistance, remember their kids names, or #### even remember they played in the stadium. And if we have to miss a one or two guys getting “lit up” per game as a result I’m pretty sure that’s a small price for us to pay as fans
I don’t like all the player safety rules, some take it a bit too far, especially with the QB. But anything concerning head and neck has serious implications for their health and quality of life later on. I don’t know why some of you are hellbent on wanting to see a kids future get ruined just so you can cheer for a big hit, pretty f*****g selfish if you ask me

Could imagine the "head-slap" today if it was still legal? Lots of helmets on the ground.
With heads still in them.

but if your job is wrangling venomous snakes then at some point you may get bit
some stuff is just unavoidable.
My biggest gripe with targeting is that is 100% subjective. Every RB in the history of foozeballL has lowered his head into some1 else.

Of course you’ll never get rid of all the injuries, but the majority of head an neck issues can be coached out. Yes RBs have always lowered their helmet and made contact with it, but up til the early 1900s we always had to light a lamp or candle to get light after the sun went down. Just because it’s the way it’s always been doesn’t mean it’s the way it should always be

to wrap up the RB around the hips like you are coached.
RB drops his head and runs into your helmet.
YOU GET PENALIZED for targeting .
That's just not fair.

If called, that situation *should* get overturned on review, unless there are indicators that you were attempting to spear (use the crown of the helmet) all along. (See Note 1: “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball).
Reminder: the TV announcers usually have zero clue as to the actual rule.
There's two flavors that can be summarized pretty easily.
1. Any forcible contact initiated with the crown of the helmet. 2. Any forcible contact to the head or neck of a defenseless player.
Under the "crown of the helmet" part (which we used to call 'spearing'), the contact does NOT have to be to the player's helmet, head, or neck--you can be called for targeting by spearing someone in the chest, or the shoulder, or the ankle, or the big toe.
The second type of targeting will depend on more factors, such as accurately determining the moment a player becomes 'defenseless' and what is 'forcible', but by the rule, is focused strictly on the head and neck.
Helmet-to-helmet spearing ticks both boxes!
Both types will also include the notion of 'intent' indicators.
NCAA 2024 Rulebook
Targeting and Making Forcible Contact With the Crown of the Helmet ARTICLE 3 No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of their helmet The crown of the helmet is the top segment of the helmet; namely, the circular area defined by a 6-inch radius from the apex (top) of the helmet This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below) When in question, it is a foul (Rule 9-6) (A R 9-1-3-I)
Targeting and Making Forcible Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player ARTICLE 4 No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent (See Note 2 below) with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below) When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6) (A R 9-1-4-I-VI)
Note 1: “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to: • Launch A player leaving their feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area • A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground • Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area • Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet
Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14) When in question, a player is defenseless Examples of defenseless players include but are not limited to: • A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass This includes an offensive player in a passing posture with focus downfield • A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect themselves or has not clearly become a ball carrier • A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return • A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect themselves or has not clearly become a ball carrier RUlE 9 / CondUCt oF PlayERs and othERs • A player on the ground • A player obviously out of the play • A player who receives a blind-side block • A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped • A quarterback any time after a change of possession • A ball carrier who has obviously given themselves up and is sliding feet first

This is, without a doubt, the most “Gen Z-esque” post I’ve read yet. This is a perfect example of why nobody respects young people. Did you ever play football? I don’t mean private school, nonathlete vs nonathlete football.
This kind of thinking is going to lead to flag football replacing real football. You don’t hear Pro bullriders asking for them to replace the bulls with fluffy sheep so the sport is more safe.
In my opinion, if these entitled children receiving millions to play a sport that most true fans would kill just to be on the team; they should make it as violent as possible. That would weed out A LOT of these 5 * busts.

Bad example using bull riding. They now wear helmets with face masks and Kevlar vests to protect themselves. Under your interpretation they would still be wearing cowboy shirts and a felt hat. Too many nasty injuries.

Wrong. I worked with Pro Bull riding and PRCA. They have been wearing helmets for a looong time. The Kevlar vests were made mandatory after Lane Frost died.
Have football players not gone from no helmet, to leather, to modern day helmets?

And so how am I wrong? I have no beef with bill riding your analogy just isn't a good one. Bull riding, like football, makes adjustments to help keep riders/players as safe as possible.

Bull riding didn’t change the sport or the rules, just the gear. You are advocating for changing the rules, even AFTER all the equipment has been updated.

Yeah I’m not gen z, but that’s definitely the most boomer-esque response I would expect from the most entitled generation. Boomers love to rag on things like participation trophies, but who purchased those? The kids? I’m pretty sure it was their boomer parents who’s fragile egos couldn’t deal with their kid not being the “best” at something and needed some sort of validation for themselves.
Parents are supposed to make better lives for the next generation. Yet somehow many of the booMErs missed the memo that they should be glad their kids had something easier than they did and instead decide to p**s and moan at everything that’s different from the 1960s

Yup. Back when I played, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, as a QB I got slammed after every pass. Sometimes quite violently. Today's players are treated like little girls. I can just hear Coach Howard cussing up a blue streak if a player laid out on the field with a wrist injury, or went down with some slight pain and then jumped up and ran off the field. He would probably have required executions at Dawn Patrol on Monday morning.....6 a.m. sharp!

What blows my mind about the younger generation of adults today is that they are not embarrassed of being pu$$ies. I’ll be 39 in a few days so it’s not like this is coming from a very old man. I would have never guessed that there would be so many limp wristed guys professing their softness like we have today.
It’s mind boggling.

Yeah you’re totally right, let’s hope we get at least one ambulance on the field per quarter and that one of the kids never walks again. Kid may be a cripple the rest of his life but at least he’s not a p***y!
