One way to curb those high utility blues

My house was build in '94 and attic insulation code back then was R18. The insulation job by the contractors was rather wanting. Thin spots, poor coverage etc. I had a local company come in and run baffles up the soffits then blow in enough cellulose to get it up to a uniform R-40. Last month's heating bill during that cold snap was $150, compared to $450ish last year. House is 2,500sf rancher located in VA for comparison.

I have a room over the garage that stays cold. Last month, I broke down and called a local insulator. He put tyvek over the existing insulation on the hip walls, and blew the space between the garage ceiling and FROG floor to R-40. Problem solved!
$1,400

For a 2500 sf attic it was around $4500. Figure it will pay for itself in five years or so. Sorta like a really great CD that never expires.

and they will loan you the machine to blow it yourself. We just did it and was all in for $1,800 in our 2,900 square foot home. Had enough insulation left to do my daughter’s home.

I have done that with a previous house. Pretty good deal

But I was much younger then, and the attic was only about 600 squares. Guy who did my current house rolled up in a large box truck and a bunch of insulation bales.

I agree. I added ~10” of roll I summation in my attic to address then spots and bare spots in a 40+ yr old house and it has made a noticeable difference

Wear a sweater and turn off the lights when you leave a room. Every little change helps.

I have ventless gas logs in my house and a 120 gallon tank that only goes to the gas logs/fireplace. The rest of the house is electric. 2400 ft2 with a very open floorplan and high ceilings. We built in 2019.
When we have the fire on, my lowest bills of the year are Winter time. Worst bill ever $345, lowest bill $98.

66 and the drafts alone are ridiculous.
House built in the mid-90’s here in the upstate. Would love to hear some feedback about doing the same here.
