Once again, ACC refs were terrible Sat.

Fortunately most of the bad calls went our way:
The TD catch w/ Nuk--still not sure what the deal was with that
The knee-down catch on a screen pass by VT--so obvious
"Sack" on Logan Thomas--tell me how that was a sack--didn't complain because it helped us but what the #### was that?!?
Any others? It's ridiculous how bad the officiating has been for YEARS and nothing has been done about it

The "sack" was weird.

But when you look at the replay, Thomas basically drops his arms. It almost looks like he is giving up on the play like the old 'in the grasp' rule of the NFL. Bad call, but with the emphasis on safety, I guess I can see how they make it.
I don't get the screen play either, but the WR does bobble the ball. Can you put a knee down and get back up if you never have control of the ball with the knee down?

Yes you can. That call was correct, when he had control and made the catch his knee was not on the ground.
Some of the others however are a different story.

Agree. His knee was not down when he caught the ball.

I thought he was down until I saw the replay later.

In this situation when the QB is wrapped up by the feet and cannot continue to move though he remains upright, he now become a defensless player. A DE or DT now possibly has an opportunity to really unload. The ref made to right call here.

The TD catch w/ Nuk--still not sure what the deal was with that-- Nuk's reaction killed his chances of getting that call, I think it could have gone either way.
The knee-down catch on a screen pass by VT--so obvious-- He touched the ball when his knee was on the ground, but he didn't possess it until he lifted his knee, it was a catch.
"Sack" on Logan Thomas--tell me how that was a sack--didn't complain because it helped us but what the #### was that?!?-- Thomas was clearly in the grasp of the DL, although he's strong enough to overcome it the rule is clear on "in the grasp". Sack, imo.

Sammy's fumble was missed by all of the officials.

The only thing I can figure out about the Thomas sack/no-sack was that he had stopped moving his feet. He was essentially standing still with no forward progress, and in the refs' judgment he was a vulnerable target for a lineman to come up and destroy him. I could be wrong but I believe more than one ref called the play dead.
All that being said, I thought it was a terrible call.

Refs really blew it on the play Robinson almost intercepted WR screen. Thomas clearly threw the ball backwards/laterally but was ruled an incomplete pass rather than spotting the ball where it went out of bounds. Had the correct call been made, VT would have faced 3rd and 7 or 8, but instead got 3rd and 2. VT runs for 4 yards and picks up the first down. They threw a TD on the next play or so in their first drive.

My apologies, I got the wrong drive. It was during VT's second drive. Even the ESPN play-by-play has it marked as an incomplete pass. They correctly marked the second lateral later in the game, but the first was not marked correctly. By the way, I did watch the game and noticed it immediately.

But if a defender comes and levels the QB while he is being held below then what?
A fine line maybe but they have been taught to protect the players

going on...the refs have apparently stopped calling anything less than an offensive lineman tackling a defensive lineman--and OC's around the country are aware of it.

And at one point in the game you have been called for 12 penalties and them 1. And three of your penalities are for offensive interference.
I hate the ACC.
