Treadwell Boots Hokies in Blacksburg, 20-17

David Treadwell kicked a 36-yard field goal with no time on the clock to give Clemson a 20-17 victory over Virginia Tech Saturday at Blacksburg, Va.

The winning kick came after Virginia Tech was called for roughing the kicker and penalized five yards when Treadwell’s 41-yard attempt with four seconds left fell short.Virginia Tech quarterback Todd Greenwood and tight end Steve Johnson combined for a 21-yard touchdown pass on a fourth and 14 with 5:48 left to give the Hokies a 17-17 tie.

Clemson took a 17-10 lead at 8:14 of the fourth quarter on a 46-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Randy Anderson to wide receiver Ray Williams. Anderson got off the pass as he was being knocked down by Tech defensive back Noland Hazzard.

Clemson (1-0) fumbled and lost the ball five times to tie a school record. Virginia Tech (0-3) converted one of the miscues into a touchdown. That score came with 10:47 left in the first half, when Hokie quarterback Mark Cox passed for nine yards to Greg Brooks to give Tech a 7-0 lead.
Clemson made it 7-3 with 42 seconds left in the half on a 31-yard field goal by Treadwell.
Virginia Tech increased its lead to 10-7 with 7:51 left in the third quarter on a 20-yard field goal by Tom Taricani.

With 14:22 remaining in the game, Clemson tied the score at 10-10 on a two-yard run by tailback Kenny Flowers. The score came after Clemson cornerback Perry Williams stripped the ball from Tech tailback Eddie Hunter, and Clemson’s Richard McCullough recovered at the Hokies’ 42-yard line.
