Now we understand how TN has been recruiting so well

For the last couple of years I've been wondering how in the world has Butch Jones been so successful recruiting at TN. It came out during Sterling Johnson's recruitment (just committed to Clemson) that he called to accept TN's scholarship offer only to find out their offer really wasn't a real offer but was a conditional offer (said he was real shocked to discover this). Did they lie? Is this how they've been so successful the last couple of years? You decide.

gleened, there have been a couple of players that had conditional offers that have tried to commit to Clemson, only to be put on hold.
It usually involves the depth chart, belief that a commit woudl be legit(Not a place holder) or an attempted commitment without a visit.
On a somewhat related note, whatever happened to "silent commitments". It use to be all the rage for websites to report..."Clemson has a secret commit. The players wants to keep it under wraps so that the team can continue to pursue other players and so that he can make the announcement official at his team banquet." You don't hear of those that often anymore.

I have a hard time believing "silent commits" were real.

Only place I've ever heard about them is message boards, from people who want to believe that a certain player is coming to their school.

You dont hear about silents because spots are being filled quicker than ever. Teams dont have time of day for a silent anymore unless you are talking top 100 player.

UT is like a lot of the SEC schools these days. The players may as well get branded because they are treated like cattle. If a better prospect pops up last second or a year later , they find a way to excuse a kid from his "commitment" or his ongoing scholarship. Cattle. They grind beef over in that league. Go Tigers

I think Dabo tries to be as up front with the players as possible. He always talks about saying that he's only got X number of spots at Y position and once they fill up, that's it. Now, I think Dabo always has a spot in his pocket for that top 10 impact recruit that decides he's interested in Clemson, and I don't think we drop commitments once we've gotten them like others do, but if somebody commits and takes a spot away, we can't always take the next player that wants to commit.
It is similar to college acceptance letters. Clemson sends out a lot of college acceptance "offers" and gets a % of those back as "commits." Dabo offers scholarships to a group of players and then once they commit, that spot is taken.

eh, this is a bit of a glass houses comment. We did the exact thing last class with the WR out of Fla that ended up at WVU. Probably need to make sure your offer is legit before pulling the trigger.

I've never understood the "committable offer"

either you offer something or you don't. If you tell a recruit that a scholarship is contingent on factors (grades, other roster moves) then it isn't an offer.

Which sucks. But I don't look at it much differently from a player that transfers from another school....if you wanted them, they have multiple national offers and have turned your way, why would you let your pride get in the way?

since there is no early signing period in football all offers are conditional until signing day. yes I agree with you that is or seems low rent to offer and not accept the players commitment, but the player or the school can change their mind right up to signing day. this is the reason that football needs an early signing period like other sports.

I think this one will be one to watch. If UT does get him on campus at some point wonder if he goes with his original Choice.

i think most offers are contingent.

If you have 15 open spots - you make a lot more than 15 offers. (Espn shows we have 170 offers out.) You have to prioritize and tell them - if you are first - or if x- y - z happens - then we will accept.
