The new Littlejohn Coliseum: An early inside look
Thirty members of the Clemson media toured the new Littlejohn Coliseum Wednesday morning, with Joe Simson (Associate Athletic Director of Facilities Management) taking 90 minutes to show off what’s been completed and what still has to be done. Full Story » |

True. To be fair, even though I completely agree with the renovation, this one was a bit controversial to many.
Still, 81to85 can't be pleased with anything built on campus currently. It's pathetic.

I've seen this before, and forgot. Thanks. He's moved on to criticizing buildings on campus now.
Think he'll write a suicide note about Clemson building architecture after we finish the Football Facility?

So you wonder why we cannot keep coaches, quality players, have a mixed BB heritage and have seen a once decent Women's program decline. Clemson fixed LJ on a bandaid budget earlier this century and Coach Purnell still left!
Some posters would find fault with winning the lottery (because taxes were to high!) As your elders once said, "Either learn how to say something nice and worthwhile or simply keep your mouth shut." Negativity is not warranted on this subject. If Clemson had wanted your rant they would have long ago asked for it. Be thankful we have a renovated LJ which will help us compete on all levels.
Go Tigers!

I completely agree, 81to85. Millions and millions of dollars to tear down a cracker box and make a smaller cracker box. We might as well have kept what we had, thrown all that money into a big pile and burned it. MONUMENTAL waste of money.

Believe it or not, this renovatin wasn't all about you.
The players' experience is/will be far upgraded, but fans like you completely miss that aspect because of selfishness.

But couldn't they have just spent the money (and much less) to improve the player's experience without gutting the arena and rebuilding it back similar to what is was before?

at littlejohn and some of it likely wasted, I am glad we did not build a larger arena. I live in Raleigh. A lot of NC a state fans lament not playing in their old arena. PNC is nice, but they don't fill it up and it doesn't have the home court advantage the old building seemed to have. I have heard similar statements from scar fans.
Littlejohn can be a very difficult arena to play in for opposing teams. We gave up a few seats, that were often empty or occupied by North or South Carolina fans. I like the nostalgia of Littlrjohn. Rock the John!

Do you even understand how badly outdated our basketball facilities were? Do you know WHY they were outdated? It wasn't because the fan experience was poor, although that certainly needed some updating. The issue was that players and coaches did not have what they needed. The practice facility, weight room, film room, recruiting areas, locker rooms, and coaches offices are now top of the line and under one roof. This is HUGE for our basketball program, because we were at a huge disadvantage in recruiting. Now we can hopefully make up some ground. Given our pathetic basketball history and lousy support of basketball at Clemson, excellent facilities are imperative to give us a shot at getting the kind of players we need. This is a definite step in the right direction. If you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you.

A lot has been changed, including where the students will sit/stand as well as where top level donors will be able to enjoy the game. The fan experience will be a lot better. As stated in one of the videos, the only aspect to the seating they didn't change was the slope of the upper bowl.
Besides, the focus here wasn't the fan experience, but the amenities for players and coaches. Having new locker rooms, practice facilities, weight room, recruiting areas, film rooms, and coaches offices were what we painfully needed. Those needs were addressed in a big way with this renovation.

I thought the plan was to put students on the sides of the court so that they would be on the TV cameras and close to the court. Are they relegated to just behind the goals again?

Right in front of the TV and they'll be standing just like at Duke.

...moveable floor goals running east-west. It is large enough so that it can be set up with two NCAA regulation size courts (with fixed goals) side-by-side and perpendicular (north-south) to the main practice court. This is a HUGE upgrade to the old facility as the old practice court was very small and not even NCAA regulation size. It was like having a practice football field that is 35 yards wide and 80 yards long.
The main event court is designed to be set up the same way with two full-size practice courts perpendicular to the main court.
That is a total of 4 practice courts for both the men's and women's teams that can be used simultaneously. I don't think they will be fighting over practice court time any more.
Next question?

The new practice court facility alone is probably bigger than ...
Jul 21, 2016, 11:33 AM
|
|
... the entire Fike Field House arena was when the team used to play there ... just for comparison's sake.
The old Littlejohn was a big step up from Fike in spectator capacity, but that was about all. It was never very effective for basketball "operations".
The new Littlejohn is going to be a great facility from a player/coach/recruit perspective even if some posters can't get past the fact that it will seat a few fans less than before.
The fat cats with the deep pockets will have a special area to call their own and the student section will be visible, packed, and boisterous right down on the floor just like at Duke.
All of this is a huge improvement and the objective now will be to field good enough teams to fill the 8,500 seats each and every game rather than having 2-3 games a year when we could probably sell 20,000 tickets and a dozen others with under 3,000 in attendance.

That UGA game to start the season and open the new coliseum should be a sellout and absolutely packed.
