National Autism Awareness day

I stopped posting the National day of because of the whiners. However, this affects many families and many Clemson families. I did not have anyone in my life like this until about two years ago.

As some may remember, I met my birth mom for the first time after 55 years. She never had another child, but she adopted my brother from Korea as a baby. They did not know he was autistic and that he would be nonverbal and physical at times. They are now dealing with a 40 year old man, yet still a child. It is hard to see how their lives have been impacted and changed. They cannot travel and cannot go very far. As they grow older the burden becomes greater. All of that to say, I became more aware because of their daily lives and the impacts that Autism creates!

Mad respect and prayers for strength, wisdom and guidance to all the families that have autism affect your lives! God bless you!!

My grandaughter is autistic, to see her you would think she's perfectly normal, but she is also dyslexic and it has taken a long time to help her learn to read. Her therapist, told her mom, she will probably never have many friends because they will think she is weird, that kinda hurts me for her, because she truly wants to be friends with everyone. She says the only true friends she has is her cat Howard, (named after a legend), and a big clumsy German Shepherd named Mattie. I've never seen her cry. Her mom says she has only seen her cry once, and it was truly heartbreaking. She rarely laughs. I can get her to occasionally give me a smile, but usually, when I try to get a laugh out of her, all I get is a dry, witty reply to my attempt. Her mom, says that her big brother is the only one that can get a good, hearty laugh out of her. She is definitely a different kind of person, and as much as I wish for her to have a normal happy life, I sometimes think, I wouldn't change a thing about her. I love her just as she is. That's her when she was a lot younger, in my logo picture, with her older brother on a gameday. She's grown a little bit since then.

Thanks for your post Flea.

I did a copy paste of her latest picture, which I don't think will be viewable. Evidently; my TNet pay grade doesn't allow me to attach files.

There she is. It's been kinda tough for her, as she grows up, but she takes everything without a complaint.

Again, thanks for your original post, Flea.

My wife and I have a 20 year old son who is severely autistic. No verbal and extremely aggressive at times. The worst thing I ever had to do was place him in residential care.
We just simply couldn't not handle him aby longer. The physical beatings I was taking were beginning to wear me down. If not for our faith in God we would have never survived. I pray for all those families with autistic children.
We love our son dearly and treasure our visits with him. Keep the faith

That’s where my mom and stepdad are at. They are in late 70s and caring for him is difficult. They live in Michigan and we are still getting to know each other and they want us to help jokingly, but I know it is more a cry of desperation and a feeling of not knowing what to do.

Thank you. What a wonderful picture of this pretty little lady. These children deserve so much more than people imagine. Thanks for the uplifting message of your granddaughter.

I have a three-year grandson on the spectrum he's such a blessing. God has blessed us with him and planed his path by having supportive family's therapist and making it possible he can stay with my wife during the day. God has opened so many doors for him in such a short time. He is nonverbal but otherwise he's pretty much like another 3-year-old. thanks for posting

My only grandchild will be 10 years old in July. He is termed “severely autistic” and until 4 months ago was non-verbal . . . prayers have been answered and he now puts some words together. He has always had an infatuation with numbers, letters and shapes. He lives on an iPad. He is as loving and caring as a child can be and a true pleasure to be with! I understand that We are blessed, many are not as fortunate . . . Yes, fits and outburst still come, but it is out of frustration in him having difficulty explaining his needs and desires.

Autism is real and many of us are close to it . . . It changes everything and everyone it touches.
