The salmon run especially red salmon has been really low so far this year. The bears are really just starting to get in the water. The fan favorite big boars like Otis are still eating grasses.

If you go to that Explore.org you can see multiple cameras. I always find this interesting. I have been within 25mi of here but always in winter, will make it there in next few yrs. They have a big viewing boardwalk.

If you go to Explore.org they have scheduled talks by the biologists that give bunch of stats and talk about individual ages, size, caloric intake, etc.

When I posted there were 4 Grizzlies, don't see any now but the salmon were starting to jump.

Do you have to fly in when you go there? I have a cousin who lives in Homer, AK. As the crow flies, it looks like it’s not real far from Katmai National Park but I don’t see any way to get there driving. We have been up to Homer a few times and plan to go back and would love to work visiting the park into a trip. And yes, I would recommend going in the summer. It is beautiful there in the summer. Just plan to deal with the mosquitoes.

To reach Katmai National Park, you cannot drive; you must fly or boat. Most visitors fly to the park via floatplane or boat from King Salmon, Anchorage, Homer, or Kodiak. Regular commercial flights are available to King Salmon from Anchorage. From King Salmon, you can take a floatplane or water taxi to Brooks Camp, the main area for bear viewing.

Thanks. Next time I’m in Homer I’ll have to check out flights. I know they have several companies that offer bear watching trips via float plane.

Correct, King Salmon actually has a couple small hotels, or at least places to stay just for this season. I was gonna boat trip it in there.
