Lake Huron facts

Mar 22, 2017, 11:22 AM

- Lake Huron is the second-largest of the Great Lakes by surface area, covering almost 60,000 square kilometres, and the fifth-largest freshwater lake on Earth.
- By volume, though, Huron is surpassed by both Superior and Michigan.
- Georgian Bay–one of the largest bays on Lake Huron–is 80 per cent of the size of Lake Ontario, and is sometimes called the sixth great lake.
- It only takes water 22 years to cycle out of Lake Huron. Much lower than Lake Superior (191 years) and Lake Michigan (99 years)
- Lake Huron was the first of the Great Lakes to be discovered by European explorers.
- Average depth is 195 feet, while the maximum depth is 750 feet.
